Shah Rukh is ready to make a sequel to "Don"

It seems Shah Rukh Khan's irresistible charm and the incredible slickness and style used by Farhan Akhtar in "Don - The Chase Begins" have not been able to save the film from biting the dust.

Just like Karan Johar's infidelity drama "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna", this action thriller has been given the thumbs down by the audience, going by the upsetting drop in collections since it released Oct 20, a day before Diwali.

In the first few days, "Don", a remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan starrer of the same name, garnered good profits mainly due to its pre-release publicity and slick television promos. Critics have since panned it as a weak film.

"Any film which has a good star cast and proper media hype does well in the first week in terms of collections. It happened with 'Don'. It had big names like Shah Rukh and director Farhan Akhtar and it was marketed smartly. So the initial collections were good," said Deepka Gupta, a New Delhi-based media consultant.

According to a report on boxofficeindia.com, the film did exceedingly well in the first week in spite of discouraging reports. It earned hit status in Mumbai, east Punjab, West Bengal and Mysore. The first week box office collections were 75-80 percent. However, the eighth day registered a drop in collections at many centres. It stood at about 55 percent.

However, Shah Rukh prefers not to take the critics seriously or the viewpoint of moviegoers, many of whom have not liked the modern "Don" at all.

"It is a waste of money. I couldn't sit through the movie after the interval," said Kanat Jain, a 60-something movie buff, who wasn't floored by the film's slickness.

Many others found the film stylish, but beyond that they had nothing good to say about it.

"The title song was shot nicely. Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were looking good and sexy. But the script was very bad, and it appears that the director has focused only on the action scenes.

"Shah Rukh was nowhere close to Amitabh Bachchan, especially in the 'Khai ke pan Banareswala' number. I felt like closing my eyes and visualising how Amitabh had done the dance scene," Annie Mathew, a young professional working in Singapore, told.

"Shah Rukh was not at all exuding confidence. Maybe he should not do remakes any more. It seems to make him extra conscious," added Mathew, who got tickets easily for the film on the fourth day.

"In terms of style the original 'Don' was more stylish, despite this film being more technically advanced. It had a better script and cast. Amitabh had more style compared to Shah Rukh. Each character stood out in the cast," said Arundhati Chowdhury, a radio journalist.

"Other than that, the film was confusing... The pace is too fast, and it does not register. It's just an average film. One can go and watch this out of curiosity. I prefer Amitabh Bachchan as Don. Zeenat Aman was notches above Priyanka," said Chowdhury.

There is no denying that Farhan emphasised on the film's looks and ignored content, a key factor that plays a major role in the success of any film. In contrast, low-budget hit film "Khosla Ka Ghosla" did very well, a good example of content being king.

"The film's direction is very slick and the locales great. It has a very good background score, something like 'Mission Impossible'. It has a well-directed stunt scene - a drop from an aircraft and a mid-air fight scene - something like a Bond movie. It has a twist in the storyline, which leaves scope for a sequel. But the film cannot compete with the original," said Simi Gandhi, a chartered accountant and a movie buff.

Maybe Shah Rukh has hit a rough patch. After Farah Khan's directorial debut "Main Hoon Na" (2004), he has given a string of flops - "Veer-Zaara", "Swades", "Paheli and "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna". He was banking heavily on "Don" to give a boost to his sliding career graph.

Right now Shah Rukh is aggressively promoting the film. After lambasting critics for panning his film, he launched the "Don" collection of clothing for Louis Philippe - it displays clothes worn by Shah Rukh in the film. It was followed by the launch of a mobile game of "Don".

"Gaming is a very good way of marketing. It is a skill, which everyone should use. My next film is 'Chak De India' which is again a sports-based film. That lends itself to games and all. I would be game if Yashji or Adi (Yash or Aditya Chopra) bring in a game on that theme," Shah Rukh told mediapersons at the game launch.

Though the film has been given a flop status in India, it is doing well in the overseas market. In the US it raked in $1.2 million and in the Gulf grossed above 3.45 million dirhams.

In spite of its bad reviews, Shah Rukh is ready to make a sequel to "Don".

"I would love to make a sequel. If Farhan does not make it, I will definitely do so," he is quoted as having said.

Shot stylishly in Malaysia, this action thriller will appeal mainly to hardcore Shah Rukh fans.

A coy-and-a-session with Neha Dhupia

    Source: DNAIndia
She's packed up shooting for the day for Apoorva Lakhia's Shootout at Lokhandwala. She lives alone. Right now, her parents and cousins are in town from Delhi . Rachana Dubey grills Ms Dhupia

What's this Hollywood commercial that you've done?
I haven't shot for it yet. I don't know who's spreading this misinformation. Talks are on with the producers. I've only promoted Police watches in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. We're planning promotions in Mumbai as well.

What have you been busy with?
I've just completed Ek Chalis Ki Last Local with Abhay Deol .. and Mithiya with Naseeruddin Shah and Ranvir Shorey. After Shootout and Delhi Heights I will start on Dus Kahaniyan.

How do you look back on Priyadarshan's Chup Chup Ke?
With satisfaction. I'm remembered for my salwar-suit-bindi look in the film. Of the 13 characters, Rajpal Yadav got the most attention.

Why have you been avoiding any comments on your film Utthan?
Utthan? I'd prefer to stay tight-lipped on it for reasons best known to me.

You once said that you don't want to do any more love making scenes. Do you mean that?
    Of course, I do.

Then, how come you're doing nude and love making scenes in Hot opposite Parvin Dabas?
What rubbish! I'm not doing any such film. Who told this? You must have got this from the internet. I've done such scenes in the past, I've learnt from my mistakes. Today I'm into glamorous roles but not skin flicks.

Which are the most difficult steamy scenes you've shot?
Julie was tough. I did such scenes in Sheesha too.. but Julie was tougher. I was doing them for the first time. I cringe when I think of those scenes.. I won't do them any more. But it's a perforamnce I'm proud of.

You've also had problems with your secretary Bhola Malviya.
I never held back his money. He was making false claims. None of what he said was correct. I wouldn't have become rich overnight by holding back his money. Fortunately my current secretary, Goldie, is not like him at all.

Are you going back to the south movies?
I did my first movie Ninney Ishta Paddaanu in Telegu. I want to go back to the south sometime. When, I don't know.

What if you hadn't won the Miss India title four years ago?
Before the Miss India contest, I was studying for my IAS exams. I was also thinking of joining journalism. If I hadn't won the title, who knows, I could have been a bureaucrat in some government department.

What's the update on your good friend Ritwik Bhattacharya?
He's my friend of 11 years. He's India's most famous squash player. There's nothing cooking between us.

    And Amrish Kumar?
He's fashion designer Ritu Kumar's son. He's also my friend from my Delhi days. We know each other quite well. But we're not seeing each other. In fact, there's no man in my life.Honestly if there was someone I'd be the first to talk about him. I would never hide my relationship. I've been open about everything I've done.

Would you marry someone from the film industry?
No, never. I 'd rather stay single than marry someone from this line of work. Not that I've anything against filmi men but I don't see myself finding a life partner here. I've never been attracted to any of my co-stars. Mixing work and pleasure is a strict no-no for me.

On a secluded island, whom would you like for company?
Will Smith. The reasoon being he's extrmely funny. He would have me in splits all the time. I wouldn't be bored for a moment.

Manisha Koirala storming out of a press conference

The recent press conference of the movie Sirf, directed by Rajaatesh Nayar saw some high-voltage drama. A journalist posed a question about Koirala to the director when the stars were on stage, which upset the actress so much that she immediately left with her Australian boyfriend.

Says our source, who was at the conference, "Manisha came in at 8 pm with her boyfriend. The event was supposed to start by then, and she was well in time. She was in a good mood and was chatting with everyone. She even told the person in charge of handling television interviews she would be present till the end."

However, everything changed when the event started. Continues our source, "When the event started and the director and stars came up on stage, Manisha was seen smoking. A reporter asked her 'How ethical is it for you to smoke on the dais?' Manisha ignored this, but before long, another reporter asked the director, 'Have you signed Manisha because she has very little work and does not charge too much money?'"

Manisha was stunned. She got up from her chair at this question. Then, signalling to her boyfriend who was sitting in the audience, she walked out of the press conference, obviously upset. After she left, actor Parvin Dabas took the mike and reprimanded the journalist for asking such a rude question. However, the press conference continued without Manisha."

Says actor Parvin Dabas, who reprimanded the journalist, "I reacted instinctively as I had to make a point to the journalist who asked that question. I didn't want him to get away with it. Frankly speaking, it's the first time I've seen someone being so downright rude to any star. Everyone was stunned. Manisha is an actress of great stature and no one has the right to refer to her in such a way. I guess it was someone who would joke with his friends later, saying, 'I asked this star this question'. I feel such a question reflects on the person asking the question, not on the person who the question is about."

When contacted, Manisha sounded excited about the film and spoke about it with great zeal, " This is a very contemporary subject. After a long time I have a film with a great role and a great story. It is about today's problems where everybody admires the next person for his bigger car and bigger house and thinks the grass is greener on the other side," she said.

However, when asked about the conference, Manisha said, "I was there at 8 pm as I was told that the event would start on time. It started a little late and I had meetings lined up after that. So I had to get up and go halfway through the conference."

When asked about the rude questions addressed to her, she said, "The smoking question was addressed to Ranveer, not me. I've seen a lot in life and these little things don't affect me any more. I simply gave all my interviews and then left. In fact, before I left I even asked journalists if there were any more questions for me to answer."

    • Frankly speaking, it's the first time I've seen someone being so downright rude to any star. Everyone was stunned. Manisha is an actress of great stature and no one has the right to refer to her in such a way – Parvin Dabas, co-star

Saif apologized to the security guard for misbehaving

Actor Saif Ali Khan has the flexibility in his character that he can easily seek apology to a lay man if he realizes what he has done is wrong.
As Saif Ali recently apologized to a security guard posted outside of his son Ibrahim's karate training centre. As per reports, Saif, who had gone to meet son Ibrahim at his karate school, was denied permission to enter into the campus by the security guard, which got the star very angry, and he almost entered forcibly into the school compound to meet his son.
However a little latter when Saif realized he shouldn't have done thing like that, he came back and apologized to the security guard for misbehaving with him. However the guard readily forgave Saif and told he couldn't recognize the star at first. As per reports Saif also joined the security guards and their friends for an iftaari party later.

My flop rate is higher than the Khans, John

There is no doubt that John is the new brightest star in Bollywood and his brightness is increasing day by day. Already his popularity is too high especially for the young generation. From his debut film ‘Jism' he has been changing himself rapidly. In ‘Dhoom' he has done even a role with a negative shade. However John has no qualms admitting that his number comes much below than the Khans. “The Khans are right up there while my number comes much below and my flop rate is higher than the Khans.” But he feels that he still has a long way to go.

The 'patch-up’ between brother Ashmit and Amisha, allegedly facilitated by Salman Khan

A recent report in a city tabloid took actress Ameesha Patel by surprise. Ameesha said that she is surprised by the news of her alleged patch-up with brother Ashmit at Salman Khan's Eid party.

According to the report, when Ameesha entered Salman's house, the actor locked Ameesha and brother Ashmit inside a room to facilitate a patch-up between them. A source present at the venue confirms, "Nothing of that sort happened.

Why would Salman interfere in anyone else's personal life? Everyone comes to Salman's house for his Eid party, so did Ashmit and Ammesha. He certainly did not go all out to sort out others' problems. The house was full of guests and Salman is very conscious about all these things. He doesn't like anyone interfering in his personal life, so he doesn't interfere in others' lives too. Plus, he'd never do anything which would make his guests feel awkward. The truth is that Ameesha just exchanged pleasantries with Ashmit when Salman presented them to each other. After that, she immediately left the venue as she the situation was becoming awkward."

When we asked Ameesha about the incident, she said, "Don't be ridiculous. Salman is a good friend of both Ashmit and me. We just happened to be at his house at the same time. Why would he lock us up in a room? All I know is that I had a blast at the party. I would also like to admit that Salman and his family are perfect hosts."

Apparently, this 'patch-up' report has aggravated the rift in the Patel family. "I am travelling and I really don't know what's going on in India," said Ameesha when we contacted her in Australia. The actress was clueless about the entire incident.

So, when will the ice between brother and sister thaw? "I don't want to comment about the future, no one except God can predict what's going to happen," she replied.

It is a known fact that Ameesha is estranged from her family. She is not on talking terms with her brother since the time she filed a case against her parents.

Ashmit lives with his parents, while Ameesha stays alone. The sole person in the family with who the actress has retained a relationship is her grandmother. She continues to be very close to her.

Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride : Dhoom 2

The biggest year-end release Dhoom 2 is revving up to a big release soon. With actors Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead, this sequel is a much larger version of the previous biking fantasy ride.

Shot in little seen Brazil and Nigeria and packed with anti-gravity stunts, Dhoom 2 looks every bit the fast paced thrill ride. This is also the first film that pairs Hrithik Roshan and a very slim Aishwarya Rai on screen.

“Some films need to be a complete departure from the serious and the ‘real’. Dhoom 2 is just that. So, fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride,” Hrithik said.

“Hats off to Adi (Aditya Chopra) for his conviction when he spoke to me about the film. He said I always play these larger-than-life characters on celluloid. So, now I need to simply be a girl. I trusted him and had fun being Sunehri,” Aishwarya said.

Dhoom 2 will show the two current superstars Abhishek and Hrithik sparring against each in this cop and robber drama. And if this wasn’t enough, there's a bare-bodied Bipasha Basu opposite Uday Chopra adding to the hot quotient of the film.

So, while the epic drama magic of Umrao Jaan may or may not work for Abhishek and Aishwarya, Dhoom 2 with its edge-of-the-seat thrill might just be the perfect year-ender for each actor in the film. Dhoom 2 hits theatres on November 24.

The most beautiful actress Aishwarya turns 33 this week

She rules the hearts of millions and is touted as one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace Indian cinema. Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 Wednesday, returns to the marquee after a long hiatus - playing a courtesan in "Umrao Jaan" and an oomph girl in "Dhoom 2".

The actress, who is said to be dating Abhishek Bachchan, will reportedly announce her engagement on her birthday. According to insiders, Abhishek's ailing grandmother Teji Bachchan is eager to see him married, and the couple is said to be planning to tie the knot early next year.

But Aishwarya, who is apparently attending family dinners and get-togethers at the Bachchan household, is tight-lipped about her relationship.

She is currently busy promoting her two films. In Yash Raj Films' upcoming "Dhoom 2", Aishwarya plays a hi-tech thief along with Hrithik Roshan, while in J.P. Dutta's "Umrao Jaan", a screen adaptation of Mirza Mohammed Haadi Ruswa's Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" and a tragic historical, she plays a courtesan.

"When Dutta narrated the script to me, I told him that if you get Aishwarya to play the role of Umrao Jaan only then make the film, else drop it. According to me, the character requires an enigmatic quality to it. This is what I feel Aishwarya's personality symbolises," said well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar on the actress.

"Hers is a personality that is a kind of riddle. Even Dutta felt the same way and now after watching the finished product I feel that no one else could have made it."

However, there is a notion among some that she is not a good actress and has hogged the limelight mainly for her looks, and her affairs with co-stars Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi.

"Aishwarya is not known as a bankable actor. People think of her as wooden. She can't emote. Dutta is not only a good director; he is also a good technician. He knows how to extract work from his artist. We are confident that Aishwarya must have played the role convincingly," New Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta told IANS.

"Umrao Jaan" and "Dhoom 2" will put to test her versatility. Critics believe that so far only Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been able to extract the best out of her in his hit "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Devdas", India's official entry for the Oscars in 2003.

Her being crowned Miss World in 1994 made her entry into films smooth. She was flooded with offers but chose to start her acting career with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film "Iruvar".

Her performance was critically appreciated and she soon forayed into Bollywood with Rahul Rawail's "Aur Pyar Ho Gaya" opposite Bobby Deol. The film not only fetched her a Filmfare award for best debut but she had top-notch directors making a beeline for her house.

She was soon signed up by one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry, Bhansali, for "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam". In this love triangle, which also had Ajay Devgan, she was paired for the first time with Salman Khan.

Their onscreen chemistry was electrifying and the film was widely appreciated and fetched her Filmfare's best actress award.

She started receiving offers from some of the biggest names in the industry - Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and Mansoor Khan.

Chopra signed her up with Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in "Mohabattein". The film didn't do well but the audience liked her pairing with Shah Rukh. Bhansali cast the two in his magnum opus "Devdas" that went on to become a major hit.

Post-"Devdas" Aishwarya shifted her focus to Hollywood. Her first international venture was Gurinder Chadha's "Bride & Prejudice". The film was a flop but it didn't stop her from getting new projects.

Some of her prestigious international projects include - "Provoked", "The Last Legion" opposite Colin Firth and Sir Ben Kingsley and "Chaos".

While scaling new heights in Bollywood and international films, Aishwarya never crossed the line in terms of skin show on screen.

"I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I am clear about what I want. I'll work only with good directors who'll offer me two-dimensional roles. The director and the role are most important.

"Women in the industry have been exploited very often but there are some actors who believe that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived. I have never done a kissing scene nor do I have intentions to," she is quoted as saying.

Since she set foot in filmdom, the India media has been sometimes nasty to her but she hasn't bothered much about what they thought or wrote about her.

"Someone asked me why I'm politically correct, even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is I've never been brought up to behave any other way. I can't say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don't believe in saying mean things. I won't feel good doing that. This is the way I am.

"I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say," she has said.

Apart from promoting a wide variety of disparate brands, Aishwarya has many firsts to her credit - she has the distinction of being the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival and also appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

About her appearance on Winfrey's show, she told the media: "I never thought I'd actually be meeting her -- and that too, on her show! I was extremely happy to be on her show. I admire her."

She also appeared on another prestigious American talk show "60 Minutes".

She has graced the covers of international magazines like TIME, which placed her on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today". Aishwarya has also been termed as one of the most beautiful women by TIME magazine.

Aishwarya, whose last Hindi release was "Shabd" that sank without a trace at the box office, is hoping to hit the bull's eye with "Umrao Jaan", "Dhoom 2" and Mani Rathnam's "Guru". While "Umrao Jaan" releases next Friday, "Dhoom 2" is set for a Nov 24 release and "Guru" in December.

Priyanka Chopra to launch her official website, trying to work out a deal with the present owner of the domain www.priyankachopra.com

Priyanka Chopra is all set to launch an official website for herself. Currently, the actress is in the process of meeting several web-page designers, both from India and abroad, for this.

"I am shooting in Mumbai for some months, so this is the time when I can meet people to get the website going. It will be an interactive website, and I will make it a point to see that it's upgraded every week," Priyanka says.

The only problem is that she has not been able to get the domain www.priyankachopra.com . "On the day I won the Miss World pageant, the domain was booked by someone. We are trying to work a deal with the person who has a right to this domain. But it seems difficult. There are several websites in my name, but none of them are official," she says.

The website will have a collection of Priyanka's photographs from her childhood days. It will also contain exclusive photographs from films on which she has worked and will be working in future.

On the work front, Priyanka is busy shooting Rumi Jaffery's film God Tusi Great Ho with Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachcan. This is her second film with Salman, after Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. "I admire the way Salman leads his life. He is a very cool guy. We both play journalists in the film," she says.

Salman gave lift to Miss Universe Zuleyka at 3 in the morning

Look, who's sitting cozy behind Salman on his bike. The pretty gal is none but Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera, who has been in India for last couple of days for an AIDS awareness campaign. As per source, Salman Khan had invited Zuleyka for an Eid party at his home. And being a huge fan of all the beautiful ladies (his split with Aishwarya Rai however is a different matter), Salman decided to give her a lift home on his bike at around 3 in the morning. Do we need to say the thing they talked on at that time?

“When there's a marriage, I won't hide it," Aish

Refuting the current rumours that her marriage with Abhishek Bachchan is scheduled to take place in February next year, Aishwarya Rai told media persons that she has no plans for marriage in the near future. “Who's doing all these shaadi soap operas with my life? I don't know. Maybe you can enlighten me,” said Aishwarya in a mere embarrassed tone. “I've absolutely no plans for marriage in the near future,” she said in a clear-straight voice.
She wondered why the media always spread false rumours about her marriage. “When there's a marriage, I won't hide it. I'll stand on the rooftops and talk about it. For now could Abhishek and I just be allowed to concentrate on our individual careers, please?”

It is Anand Surapur’s The Fakir. It actually was supposed to be complete even before Don had gone on floors. But since the director had some personal issues to deal with, the shooting was stopped for a while. We will start again on November 2 and we are heading to Venice for a month’s schedule to finish the film”, informs Farhan. Let us wish him all the best for his acting debut. We are sure he can pull off acting as good as he directs films.

Shah Rukh Khan turns 41 on Thursday

    Source: DNAIndia
You’ll be 41 on November 2. How old do you feel?
In fact, I feel very young. I’m told I look young and hot in Don which makes me feel good. A couple of days ago, I watched Veer Zaara on TV, I looked really old as the buddha guy.

    What are your birthday plans?
I’ll chill at home, I need to relax. The past few days have been hectic with Diwali and Eid. Also I’ve been very busy with the promotion of Don. Now that the film has done well, may be I’ll call the producer home and count the money. I think I’ll just do that.

Any particular birthday of yours that you remember fondly?
I’ve never sat down and thought about this. I don’t consider birthday to be a special day. It’s like any other day. It only brings you closer to lesser birthdays.

What’s the best birthday gift you’ve ever received?
For the past few years my friends have not given me anything. They say, “What do we give you, you’ve got everything.” But I love to receive books, I’m a book lover.

    What would you gift yourself?
In an interview earlier, I’d said, “Don is my birthday gift to Amitji.” (Grins) Now, I will gift it to myself.

What’s the take on the box-office collections of Don?
I’m thrilled, the collections are fantastic. When I first watched Don, I felt it was long. But it’s a modern way of making a film. We were very clear from the beginning that the film was targeted at the youth. And it has worked with its audience. They love the film. It’s a new Don and that’s what has worked. I feel I have acted very well in Don. I say this very rarely after watching my films.

    Did you anticipate a hit?
While I was making it, I thought it would be a big hit. But after watching it, I was a bit worried because I found it long. The story was a little convoluted, we were not sure if everyone would understand it. Then, a certain section of the audience didn’t appreciate it. But I repeat, the film was for the youth.

Even the songs were recorded with the youth in mind. They have loved the film and me. No one has said I was bad, even in the Khaike paan song. My final analysis about the success of my films are with my kids. If they like it, then I know it’s a hit. Last night Aryan sang Khaike paan… and danced to it. Now I know the film is a success.

Were you upset with the negative reviews?
Honestly, not too many reviewers have a critical knowledge and over the years critics have increased but the knowledge hasn’t. Some critics don’t review a film, they make personal statements. The audience isn’t swayed by what the critics write, they still go to watch a film if they want to. Krrish and Fanaa both didn’t get critical approval but the films did great business at the box-office. I respect the opinions of a few critics…even if they don’t like my films.

What irritated me was a TV channel talking about the end of the film, they even revealed the twist on its first day. You don’t do that.

There have been comparisons with Amitabh Bachchan.

I’ve done films of Dilip saab and Amitji because they are great. I can’t match up to them. Whether it’s Devdas or Don, I’ve done it my way. I’m proud of it.

It seems your fans now call you Don.
Yes. It feels good when you’re identified with a certain character.

The initial collections of Don have been attributed to your star presence.
(Laughs) That didn’t help me in Paheli. I feel the brand of Don is responsible. The promotion evoked curiosity. It was after long that I had a release which said Shah Rukh Khan in and as. The audience trusted us. I’m very thrilled with the success of the film.

How come you went all out to promote the film?
It’s my film. After a long time I had a solo release. For the past few years I’ve had only multi starrers. I cannot be in the forefront. Paheli I feel was a different take. Even with Main Hoon Naa, I felt Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao and Farah Khan should be more visible. With Don, I knew I had to just go all out and give a proper message. I’m glad I did that.

Do you feel the pressure of being the numero uno actor?
With every hit, I feel more responsible about my next release. Right now, I’m very charged about Chake De India and Om Shanti Om. I want to make lots of films. I don’t want to restrict myself to just a couple of films. Even healthwise I’m feeling great.

If you could go to a certain age which would you choose?
My son Aryan’s, so that I could play with him and not worry about my father being a superstar.

I am no superstar: Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan talk to Rajeev Masand for CNN IBN
    Source: CNN IBN
An talented actor who after years of being saddled with thankless roles decided to break away and show, what he is really made of. In the last two-years Saif Ali Khan has delivered not only a string of hits but also a bunch of credible performances that put him at the top of his league.

CNN-IBN Entertainment Editor: Rajeev Masand speaks to the star about his journey to the top.

Rajeev Masand: Let me start with an offensive question first. You spend very little time in India these days. You are either travelling or shooting abroad. And when in India, you are seen mostly shooting for ad films, doing lots of endorsements for big brands. It seems you are on an endorsement spree to just grab some money and run. Is that true?

Saif Ali Khan: Not really. I would rather make money doing some prestigious top-level brand endorsements. I do not make too much money from movies. And my focus is not just to make money. I do films because I love them. I do a script and work with a production house simply because I love being an actor. I am not just looking at the financial gains but its got more to do with doing something substantial by way of films or even endorsements for that matter.

I feel lucky to have got the opportunity of doing big endorsements. I know that it will not last forever and that all these projects might not always come my way. But I just hope it lasts for a few more years. Perhaps I won’t take the money and run but would rather gracefully accept the money and walk away.

Rajeev Masand: You have been on a roll work-wise. Your solo films Parineeta,Salaam Namaste, Being Cyrus and most recently Omkara have done quite well at the box office. Tell me, does success tastes any different now?

Saif Ali Khan: I think you get things only when you are ready for them. When I wasn’t successful, I had many fantasies about how things would be like when I become successful. I think one of the best things about being successful is the lack of pressure in terms of competition from other actors.

I have done solo films, and the most wonderful aspect was that I was free to do my own bit. In my past films, I often felt inferior to the people I was working with. That feeling of inferiority somehow played on my mind and affected me slightly. I only hoped to get out of that slot and do better things on my own.

Some two-three years ago, I got a clear idea in my mind that I wanted to play a character that would be urban and new. I wanted to play someone who can is more of a character than a hero. I wanted to play this guy who is not western but is just a normal guy living in Melbourne or Amsterdam. And then I played exactly similar characters in Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum.

Rajeev Masand: You also played such character in Being Cyrus.

Saif Ali Khan: Being Cyrus is slightly different. I think it was more of an artistic sort of whim. Though it was an amazing production. There is another world out there of alternate cinema, which works on low budget but is great cinema with really well organized crews and teams. That was also something that I enjoyed doing.

Rajeev Masand: Is that the reason why people were so pleasantly surprised with Omkara where they see an actor that they have perceived largely as this ‘hip urban guy’ suddenly take a u-turn with a film set in the Indian heartland.

Saif Ali Khan: Yes, that was the plan and I think it worked. Its nice to balance things out by doing films like Omkara. That is how people are in a large part of our country. These kinds of films are not surreal but they have got more to do with a different kind of reality. Though it has got little to do with absolute real life and emotions.

Hum Tum made me look like a new hero. It did not look like someone I had played before. There was something about the character that looked right and fitted all the parameters of Hindi cinema. But at the same time had newness to it because it had me playing it.

We have taken the same thing forward with Salaam Namaste and to a lesser extent with my latest film Tara Rum Pum as well.

Rajeev Masand: What are the benefits that success allows you today? Something that you did not have some 5-7 years ago?

Saif Ali Khan: I think, confidence and freedom of choice are a few things that I have now. The freedom to take a couple of months off and to be able to say that ‘I won’t do this project because I choose to spend the time with my family’ is something that is possible now. Actually I am just beginning to be successful and it has got to do more with luck and guidance. I think I still have a long way to go.

Rajeev Masand: You play guitar, don’t you?

Saif Ali Khan: Yes I do. In High school it was compulsory for each one of us to take up a music instrument. And I took up guitar. I loved guitar-oriented music whether it was classical or rock. I thought it would be a fun to learn and then I started thoroughly enjoying it. I recently performed with Parikrama, which is a fantastic group. We are planning more of such concerts in late December in about four cities. I think that should be exciting.

Rajeev Masand: Do you feel powerful with your guitar? Like when you performed on stage was it a big thrill?

Saif Ali Khan: When you are actually playing live, it is a different ball game all together. It is a tremendous experience. If you are just pretending to play, you can feel like a rock star. But if you are actually playing, it’s a special feeling. Its not like when you are acting, but rather a very humbling experience. You feel like you have created an artistic field around yourself. Similarly I feel that doing theatre would really be expanding horizons.

Rajeev Masand: So do you plan to take up theatre?

Saif Ali Khan: Not really. I don’t see myself doing Hindi theatre and with all due respect to the English theatre, I don’t see much relevance of it in India. The audience is limited and even if you are great you perhaps won’t be noticed that much. You have a limited amount of time to spare, and you would certainly want to spend that doing films. You need to manage time between work and family and have a bit of a private life. Doing a play would perhaps be too time consuming.

Rajeev Masand: When you go for holidays do you prefer big cities or the country?

Saif Ali Khan: I like both and I’m very fortunate that either I adapt very quickly or my work suits what I happen to want. We were in New York for about a month and half. Just as it was getting crazy, we were shifted to Bedford, which is just an hour away from the New York City. It is full of lakes and trees.

I didn’t go back to the city even on day offs. It was really nice. I am slowly becoming a country person with good company around or even alone. But, yes there have been a lot of big cities in my life recently.

Rajeev Masand: Do you crave for anonymity sometimes? I asked Preity Zinta this question and she said that she really wants to be left alone and not be recognized all the time. I asked Shah Rukh Khan the same question and he said he would be clueless if people didn’t recognize him. Would you also like to be left alone sometimes?

Saif Ali Khan: I think I have that amount of anonymity to a certain extent. We are not world famous in any possible sense. It also depends where you go. Usually only Bangladeshis, Indians or Pakistani people recognize you.

I probably take it more seriously when there are other stars around. When you are at a premier or a public place signing autographs, I want my share of stardom at that time. But generally if I’m with my daughter in a mall, and some kind of a scene gets created, I have to alter my thinking to not loose my temper and say ‘leave me alone’ kind of things.

I am a very private person and I do get a little intrusive because of that. Unfortunately you have to get rude when things are getting out of hand. At times at a press conference or somewhere else, things do get out of hands. It’s a stampede sometimes with people literally jumping on to you. Sloppiness does get me a little tense when it gets rowdy and noisy.

At times it’s not even worth answering a question because people can hardly hear you. But of course you have to remember that all that would be seen would be your face. You wish if only people could see what is happening behind the camera they would perhaps understand. To incessantly answer your question, I love my job and I love doing it.

And of course I appreciate that stardom has opened so many doors. We all are so privileged. I am very grateful to everyone for it, but do I crave anonymity? Perhaps I’m not famous enough to crave for something like that.

Rajeev Masand: Do you think of yourself as a role model for your kids?

Saif Ali Khan: Yes. I am a role model for them whether I think of myself as one or not. Everything that I do, somewhere down the line both of them will base what they want and what they don’t want on what I’m like. Whatever you do, you are going to make a deep impression as a parent. Whether you give helpful guidance to them or not, it remains a fact that they will look up to you.

Rajeev Masand: So do you have mind your Ps and Qs for that?

Saif Ali Khan: I think I am quite well mannered in that sense. But sometimes kids see you in situation when you are getting a bit too much of attention. I do scowl at times.

My father is a role model for me. He never looses his cool. He is a true gentleman in a very dignified sense. My sister and my mother always tell me to look up to my father in tense situation. They tell me that when in doubt I should look at my father how he would react in a situation like this. I would like to set similar example for my kids.

Rajeev Masand: Of the two of your kids, who is the more spoilt one?

Saif Ali Khan: I spoil both of them equally. Its weird because both my kids Sara (daughter) and Ibrahim (son) have such distinct natures. Sara came first by a couple of years. She is six years elder to my son. She is already a young lady now. Right now Ibrahim is obsessed with Count Dracula.

He plays cricket and many other games. His mum has enrolled him in Karate classes so I have been going there to catch some of his action. His favourite sport is cricket. I read out stories to them and its fun to expose them to my childhood heroes. I tell them about things like Treasure Island and the stories that I have read as a kid.

Rajeev Masand: So do you think your son is going to pick up (cricket) what you didn’t ?

Saif Ali Khan: I wasn’t so bad really. He plays pretty well now. I think it will take some time before he knows for sure that is he is going to take up cricket seriously. By the time he turns ten, we will know whether it’s a gift like it was with my grandfather and father.

Rajeev Masand: Do they have any favourite film of yours?

Saif Ali Khan: I don’t know and I never really ask them. I think only recently have they found me acceptable. Like most people I don’t think either of them were Saif fans till about five-six years ago.

Rajeev Masand: So who were they fans of?

Saif Ali Khan: Shah Rukh, Salman who else? Sara used to kiss the TV whenever Shah Rukh would to come. Ibrahim does looks up to me. He copies more or less everything including my hair-cut, clothes and other stuff. There is great amount of responsibility there as well.

Rajeev Masand: Well all the best you. We hope you continue to be a great actor and an even better dad.

Saif Ali Khan: Thank you Rajeev. It was a pleasure talking top you.
