News is that a stalker has been posting every little thing you do on your website www.johnabraham.com?
That's right, this person knows every detail of mine, right to what's cooking in my kitchen. I'm not upset. Everyone wants to be famous, I can't complain about the price of fame. If I need privacy, I know when to draw my curtains. I should just let the plants on my terrace grow taller.
I want to be accessible to my fans. How difficult is it to shake someone's hand? In fact it's difficult to roam around wearing dark glasses at night with four bodyguards. I don't have a security problem.
Do girls proposition you on your website?
Yes and that's really very sweet.
Reportedly three agents were wanting to handle your work in America.
Not three, two. And that's because I've been at the Toronto International Film Festival two years in a row. Last year it was with Water and this time with Kabul Express. So, now I do have an agent and manager there.
Have you been offered any international films?
There have been some offers but nothing to blow my trumpet about. Having an agent there does not really translate into work. To get work, you need to stay there. So, either you return and do a PR exercise saying you've got great offers in Hollywood which is not true. Or believe that India is where my audience and home are. I'm going to be here as long as I can. I'm not going to do a second-hand cameo of a Middle-Eastern guy. Chances of a main lead role there are very slim.
You're considered to be hot property in the home market today, aren't you?
You must ask the producers who've signed me on or the producers who may contemplate not to sign me after my next three releases. I have a good mix of films. If I've to rate myself on a scale of 10 I'd give 5. If I'm in a 100-metre race with eight runners, seven are ahead of me. At this point, I'm in a comfortable position... that's last.
The upside is that I'm taken seriously. There's immense respect that has come from nowhere and for no reason. I'm even asked which co-stars should be cast with me but
I refuse to make any suggestions.
Do you feel vindicated since you were written off soon after Jism?
I've been written off more than once. I'm still being written off. I've tried to prove that I can stand up against those who I call good actors. 'Vindicated' is probably too harsh a word but yes I feel relieved that I haven't been written off.
Was the post Jism phase tough?
Jism worked purely because of Bipasha. I remember exhibitors telling Mahesh Bhatt that the collections were 100 per cent.
I thought house-fulls were normal, but my next four releases just had 20-30 per cent collections.
Thankfully, Aditya Chopra approached me with Dhoom. In every actor's life, there's only this one defining film which changes his career graph. I'll be always grateful to Adi for having faith in me when others had lost it.
You’re considered an actor today… and not just a hunk with a toned body.
(Laughs) I've done a photo shoot recently where I've shown my body again. I don't want people to forget that I've a body too.
Are you ambitious?
I'm very ambitious and yet very cautious. I think 100 times before I make a move. I choose my movies with the yardstick -- if I was an audience, would I like to watch this movie? Then I look at the production banner.
But aren't you demanding an astronomical price today and even getting it?
I ask for what I deserve. If the producer and director convince me that I should charge only a certain amount, then I listen to them. I'm not ruthless about my price because I know that after two-three films, equations could change.
What have your learnt of showbiz ?
I'm still learning. I don't know what happened during the Rockstar stage shows. I went out to make friends and I came back with enemies. I've learnt even if you keep to yourself and do your own thing, you'll be whipped on your backside.
Is Salman Khan still miffed with you?
I don't know what the problem is..but there's a problem for sure. I respect Salman. If he has a problem, he shows it. Time will sort out the problem. I'm a Salman fan. I like watching him on screen and that's not going to change. After the world tour, we shot together for Baabul. He was extremely civil on the sets. It was as if nothing had happened.
Would you do a movie with him again?
If it's a great script, I'd love to do it. But it all depends again on the comfort level. If he's comfortable with me, he'll do it. If not, then I'll graciously step aside. No matter what, my work has to go on irrespective. I have to earn my living.
What about the negative vibes with Akshay Kumar after Garam Masala?
There were no negative vibes with Akshay ever. I told him we should do a whacky movie again. He said it was a great idea. It would be cool to work with him... but I do know that I won't be just one of the four beautiful women in our next movie.
Do you have any friends in the film industry?
The nicest people I've met are Bobby Deol, Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Uday Chopra. I haven't given myself an opportunity to get close to them. Maybe I'm at fault, maybe I need to get friendlier.
What's the update on Bipasha Basu?
Please believe me, I'm very happy with Bipasha. Our relationship is misconstrued because we have settled down and are laidback. We are at peace with each other.
Reportedly you two are together because of a clause in an endorsement campaign. A split would mean financial loss.
Rubbish. This is really insane.
What about the liaisons with Mallika Sherawat and Vidya Balan?
There was a point when I found such stories amusing. Now I think, some people may really believe that something was on. There was nothing on either with Mallika or Vidya.
Any unfulfilled dreams?
I want to win the Best Actor trophy at any of the award functions… including the Oscars.
