Taylor Lautner Flops, but So Have Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

Team Jacob failed to turn out for the Twilight actor's first starring role, leading to a dismal $11 million opening for Abduction, which finished fourth behind The Lion King, Moneyball, and Dolphin Tale.

Compare that to the opening of all three Twilight movies, and it's clear that Lautner's young fan base isn't exactly champing at the bit to see everything he does. But his Twilight co-stars haven't fared much better on their own.

Twilight's Big Three — Lautner, Robert Pattinson, and Kristen Stewart — have a chemistry audiences love in the vamp-centric saga, which has averaged opening box office weekends of more than $92 million. But separately, none of them has opened a movie for more than $20 million. So what gives?

    Non-Twilight Projects since 2008:
    Valentine's Day, Abduction
Non-Twilight Lifetime Box Office Average: $53.5 million

Lionsgate Studios was hoping to build a Bourne-like franchise on Lautner's first leading role, but by Friday it was already evident they had a dud on their hands. Without any other big names in the movie, the studio was banking on Lautner's star power, so it's easy to see this as a referendum on his ability to draw an audience. Unfortunately this is Lautner's only leading role outside Twilight, and he has the smallest body of work out of the the Big Three. The consensus seems to be that if he fails to deliver a big non-Twilight movie by the time Breaking Dawn, Part 2 hits cable, his opportunities will dry up.

To be fair, that $11 million opening is better than anything Stewart has done lately, but Lautner doesn't have her nine years of experience or critical appreciation.

Non-Twilight Projects since 2008: Welcome to the Rileys, The Runaways, The Yellow Handkerchief, Adventureland
Non-Twilight Lifetime Box Office Average: $17.8 million

While Lautner has been picky with roles, Stewart has taken advantage of her newfound stardom by working on lots of projects that appeal to her. None of them have made much money, but only one of them (Adventureland) had a wide release. With a production budget of $10 million and a lifetime take of $4.6 million, The Runaways is a known money loser, and with a worldwide gross of $17 million, Adventureland probably is, too.

Stewart has stubbornly hid in indie movies for most of her career, but next year we'll see if she can bring a respectable opening to the dark fairytale Snow White and the Huntsman. Even if she doesn't, Stewart's long resume and varied roles safeguard her from that ticking time bomb that hangs around Lautner's neck. If anything, Stewart seems happy to be obscure as long as she gets to work on projects she likes.

    Robert Pattinson

Non-Twilight Projects since 2008: Little Ashes, Remember Me, Water for Elephants
Non-Twilight Lifetime Box Office Average: $92 million

While Pattinson has proved audiences will accept him outside the Twilight saga, he hasn't starred in a homerun yet. His box office average is blown a little out of whack by his supporting role in the fourth Harry Potter movie, but Water for Elephants did turn a respectable profit after opening with a middling $18 million weekend. He didn't fare as well with Remember Me, which opened with an $8 million weekend.

Pattinson has a decent shot at silver screen longevity. He already has more variety in his body of work than Lautner, and like Stewart he's happy to work on indies instead of blockbusters. It still seems like all he needs is one big role to put him over the top, but until then he's happy with a slow burn.
