MOVIE REVIEW: Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai

'Golmaal Returns' bigger & better
Now the winning combo has teamed up for the second time in GOLMAAL RETURNS. And the second instalment of the GOLMAAL franchise promises even more fun. How do we know that? Well, this writer had an exclusive dekho of its first promo as also two [entire] songs from the film [the promos will be on air by mid-September].
GOLMAAL RETURNS promises double dhamaal as there's glamour in abundance this time. Besides a bevy of beauties [Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Celina Jaitley and Anjana Sukhani], there's a new actor in place of Sharman Joshi. It's Shreyas Talpade.
What does one look forward to in the promo and also in those two songs? We won't reveal much, but here's something that you can relish… In Ajay's debut-making film PHOOL AUR KAANTE, the actor made a grand entry atop two moving bikes. The same feat was repeated in GOLMAAL. Now watch Ajay atop two Hummers, while Kareena makes an entry on a sports bike.
The title song has all the germs to be a chartbuster. The energy is infectious and you're hooked on to it the moment you watch it. But the song that also catches your attention is the one where Ajay and Arshad are at loggerheads. Right from bows and arrows to blasts, this song has it all. The makers have spent a fortune [Rs. 2.5 cr.?] on this number.
If the songs of GOLMAAL RETURNS are an indication of what is to follow, expect a laugh-riot to explode this Diwali.

Enough of hearsay, here's the first official confirmation… SINGH IS KINNG is past. Vipul Shah has moved on. He's all set to embark on his new venture, LONDON DREAMS. The film, as we all know by now, brings the HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM combination of Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan after a hiatus.
One of the hottest projects without doubt, LONDON DREAMS has caught the fancy of a number of corporate entities, but the one to bag the rights is Indian Films, the same firm that acquired SINGH IS KINNG for an astronomical amount. LONDON DREAMS too comes with a heavy price tag: Rs. 120 crores.
"Yes, that's the figure," Vipul Shah makes his first official statement, "We've [Indian Films and Vipul] shook hands, only the paper work has to be completed." Earlier, Vipul's SINGH IS KINNG set the record of being the most expensive film. Now his next film has set the bar higher!

Ajay Devgan and Kajol shoot a special song for Haal-e-Dil

It may be recalled that Ajay was even involved during the auditions in finding the right male lead opposite Amita. After auditioning many guys, the talented duo of Nakuul Mehta and Adhyayan Suman were zeroed in opposite Amita.
As Haal-e-Dil gears up for release later this month, Ajay and wifey dearest Kajol even went ahead and shot a special song for the film. The song called 'Oye Hoye' seems like a typical Punjabi number and has Kajol dressed in a beautiful maroon salwar kameez. The song, which was shot at the Filmistan studios in Mumbai, also features the film's lead pair Nakuul Mehta and Amita Pathak dancing along with Ajay and Kajol.
Hope Ajay and Kajol's magic rubs off to this film.

Kareena steps into Kajol’s shoes

And the Czarina's on a roll, bagging films and collecting awards at the same time.
Apparently, the latest in her kitty is Ajay Devgan’s second directorial venture which he’s going to announce very soon. The actor-turned-director whose U, Me aur Hum with wife Kajol generated a mixed response from the audience, is reportedly all set to direct another film and this time, he has opted for Kareena instead of Kajol.
“Ajay and Kareena’s jodi was a hit in Omkara. Distributors want to cash in on their chemistry. Ajay, too, wants to recreate that magic with his second directorial venture,” says an insider.
The two are also starring in Golmaal Returns. And that’s not all. If the industry is abuzz with Bebo doing Ajay’s film, then there’s yet another story that’s creating ripples. It’s rumoured that Kareena has stepped into Kajol’s shoes yet again. “She is being considered for Shah Rukh Khan’s much awaited film, My Name is Khan,” says the source. Industrywallahs say that it won’t be long before the Bollywood Badshah makes the announcement himself.

'I go with the script'

,U Me Aur Hum
“I’m afraid I’ll be seen maybe once a year, if not less, but I’m starting a new film with my husband very shortly. It’s actually an animation film with human characters called Toonpur Ka Superhero, something like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
We’re actually playing ourselves, yes, we’ll be Ajay and Kajol. But the cartoon characters get the main roles. It will be healthy competition for me,” Kajol joked.
She’s more full-time mother and part-time-actress now, but Kajol loves being a mother. “I was born to be a mother. It’s my niche in life. And I don’t mind if it sounds a little syrupy in this day and age.
Whoever I’ve worked with, Aditya Chopra in Fanaa or my husband in U Me Aur Hum, knew that my baby comes at numbers 1 to 10, everything else comes later,” said a much mellowed Kajol. According to her, the secret of her staying power is that she does little work. “I like to do less work. No, seriously, I’m lazy. So is my husband. But if I get any more choosy, I won’t be working at all. It’s not that I’m extra selective, but I look at a project in its entirety. I won’t just grab an offer because it comes from a big banner. I believe in the power of the story more than the storyteller.”
All of Kajol’s films have featured her in pivotal parts but, the actress said, she wouldn’t mind doing a small, meaty part as well. “Give me six juicy scenes and I’ll do the role. But those don’t really exist in our cinema. Frankly, even the full-length roles that are offered to me aren’t so great,” Kajol added. What about Fanaa? “Earlier I didn’t do my friend Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna because I had no time. But then, when Fanaa came to me, it sounded really good. But as it usually happens, it turned out better on paper. Like I say, the script is always better than the film. The book is better than the film.” Not true in the cases of Man Woman & Child and The Godfather. Kajol said defensively, “I haven’t read those books.”
She now wants to work only with people she’s comfortable with. “Not necessarily friendly, but yes, who I’m comfortable with. I do so little work, I’d rather do it with people whom I can relate to. I’m not talking about bum-chum friendship, just a basic comfort level is essential.” And suppose she has to choose between doing a film with her husband and her friend Karan Johar? “They both understand me very well as a human being and an actor. So I’d go with the better script.”

While everyone on the sets was busy preparing for the next performance, Kajol started crying on the sets for no apparent reason on Monday.
Satish Dutt, the director of the show, said on phone from Mumbai: "Yes, Kajol was crying badly and everybody was there at the sets. I called Ajay and asked him what had happened to her. He said that ever since Kajol's dad has expired, she has been crying very often since she misses him a lot."
Kajol's father, director Shomu Mukherjee, died on April 10.
Dutt added that although Kajol's mother Tanuja hugged her, Ajay opted to stay away and let her calm down on her own.

Kajol: I plan to have some more children!
Labels:

,Bollywood News
,Kajol Devgan
When asked Kajol about those rumours that she doesn't get along with fellow A-lister and cousin Rani Mukherjee, to which Kajol replied, 'I think she's a superb actress. She's achieved a lot in her life, and she deserves credit for that. As far as not liking her, there's nothing like that, it's just we don't probably meet everyday. Yes, we're not the best of friends, but that doesn't mean we're enemies. It's nothing like that.'
They revealed how the title for their forthcoming film U, ME AUR HUM was actually chosen. Kajol said, 'We couldn't find the right way to title our film.'
Ajay said, 'Its a film's about two people- so it's about you and me, and it's about how we have become a 'we', so we thought about 'you, me and we' and finally that's how U, ME AUR HUM came about. So it was in the middle of conversation that the title popped up...It's an honest, entertaining commercial film, made from the heart. I hope, what everyone will love is the film in its entirety.'
'If at the end of the film a husband holds his wife's hand, or a boyfriend goes and calls his girlfriend, then I'll know Ajay has made a good film' says Kajol. 'I wish Ajay all the love, all the success'.
We delved into why Indian films aren't generally nominated for Oscars to which Kajol replied, 'I don't really know, I think it's the fact that we have to promote the right films that are made, so I think it's the selection committee... I think the fault lies with us, that we're not sending the right films. That is our problem really.'
'We need an international committee to chose which films should go from India. Because maybe I don't think we have the objectivity to chose which film should go from our country, basically.'
Kajol is also famed for having a magical on screen chemistry with Shah Rukh Khan. We asked about this to which Kajol replied, 'As SRK also says, there's no chemistry, but there's a comfort level, we've known each other for years, we're friends. But there's no such thing as chemistry. Either you're a good or you're a bad actor'.
On the key to a successful marriage; 'There's nothing to learn, I think with each person the secret is separate but behind each successful marriage you need to try, not just once a year, but day by day to stay with your partner'.
On whether she misses doing lots of acting Kajol replied, 'Not at all, not at all. Because my life (touch wood) has been pretty complete. I've had a daughter, I plan to have some more children and I have a huge family, so my heart is big...I have Ajay in my life, most important'.
Ajay was equally gushing when talking about Kajol, he said, 'I just want to thank her for just being with me. I think she's made my life with just being with me and just being a part of my life. Thank you so much'
We asked on whether directing his wife was awkward, 'Absolutely not. If you have an actress like Kajol, it's a director's delight, he can make the actor perform or push the scene as much as he wants because he knows there's someone that's going to deliver it'.
Ajay has always been known as a man of few words, to which he replied, 'That's how I am, I am just an introvert person. And I really don't want to force myself to change, I just make an effort.'
Regarding his acting career and doing his own stunts Ajay said, 'I don't think it's a particular genre which I like- I like doing different things, so that I don't get bored of one genre- after two comedies I'll do something else, and after that, then something else... because my father was an action director so I've been trained in stunts- so I could do most of the stunts myself. Since childhood I've been moving around or training with his people so it comes very easily, or maybe it's in the blood!'

Kajol holds forth on UMAH

,U Me Aur Hum
“The next few days until the film’s release on April 11 will get even busier. We are waiting for the first print to arrive. Then there is the pre-release stuff,” she points out as we ask her…
What did you gift Ajay?
I haven’t, yet. I have to check what he has and what he doesn’t. It also depends on the time I have and where I can go to pick up a birthday gift. But Nysa gave him a Dear Papa birthday card and she wrote in it herself. He was extremely touched by it. His birthdays are always a strictly family affair.
So there were no celebrations?
Just a family dinner at home with his folk and mine that’s always the way. He never cuts his birthday cake it is the kids at home who do it for him.
Is there anything special you do before the film releases? Seek divine intervention?
We are extremely cosmopolitan when it comes to that. We have done the rounds of temples and gurudwaras.
How have your B-Town pals reacted to the UMAH promos?
Karan Johar SMSed to say the promos were looking good. I haven’t met Shah Rukh for a very long time now. He is busy with his IPL team and his new TV show. I have not caught up with Aamir too; I have yet to watch Taare Zameen Par. In fact, I have not seen a film for almost a year. I have a lot of things to catch up on after UMAH.
Were you the natural choice to act in UMAH?
When Ajay narrated the script to me, he said no one else but me could do justice to the role. I thought it was very sweet of him and I found the story to be fab; so it was like I’d love to be part of his directorial debut.
Having watched him as a director, do you harbour aspirations of being one yourself?
Not at all. I don’t have that passion for direction. I will never be a director not now or even at a later stage.
Have you said yes to Karan Johar’s next film with Shah Rukh Khan?
Karan spoke to me about it; it was just casual talk. I have not even heard the script so it would be unethical to say anything about this project at this stage. And anyway, Karan has now delayed the film.
Why did you refuse Rajkumar Hirani’s Idiot?
I was approached by Hirani and after the narration, I didn’t think I suited the character. He needed someone younger. That is the reason I had to say no! The buzz about me checking with Shah Rukh whether I should take on the role and SMSing him was someone’s vivid imagination at work.
Are you part of Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ramayan?
I had given my consent to play Sita. But at the moment, I have no clue what is happening to the project.
There is speculation that U Me Aur Hum is inspired by the Hollywood flick The Notebook?
I haven’t seen The Notebook but the film is not inspired by it. UMAH is based on an uncharted idea which we believed in and I have loved the entire journey.

Says Bhavikk, “Though the year 2008 is amongst his best numbers, Ajay still needs to remain cautious.
He is likely to go through increasing amount of stress levels all through the year.
Wearing a yellow sapphire set in gold will help him avoid unnecessary mental worries,” advises Bhavikk.
“The release date for U Me Aur Hum on April 11 is apt but the title of the film adds up to Number 39.
This number is neither totally auspicious nor inauspicious for him.
The film should achieve moderate success,” predicts Bhavikk.

Birthdays are special and a surprise makes them even special. Ajay Devgan was surprised on his birthday by the presence of his parents and sisters on the sets of Rock N' Roll Family. A wonderful gift indeed, Debut Director of U, Me Aur Hum, Ajay Devgan got the best birthday gift yesterday (March 31) when his entire family landed up on the sets to cut a cake with him in advance.
"I was pleasantly surprised, considering my parents never go on television. It was one of the most beautiful gifts I've ever received!" says Ajay. In addition to this, the creative Head of the show had planned some other surprises for Ajay.
Footage of his best friend Vijay Nagra and his family who are based in South Africa was shown. Ajay had not met his friend for almost for four years. Overnight, the footage was taken and the tapes were flown on the sets. Ajay who primarily does not like surprises was almost in tears. After which they wheeled in the cake and on his nephew's (Aman) request, he cut the cake. All in all Ajay was pleasantly surprised and in a way received a great birthday gift.

Ajay's growing a moustache
Labels:

,U Me Aur Hum
Says a source close to Ajay, “Ajay was never this superstitious but with UMAH nearing release, he’s willing to do what’s best for the film. A few days ago, a friend of his told him that whenever he sported a moustache for a film, the film had garnered commercial and critical success.
The examples the friend gave were Ram Gopal Varma’s Company, Harry Baweja’s Qayamat, Prakash Jha’s Gangaajal and recently Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara.”
Though Ajay is not superstitious by nature, he was willing to try out the friend’s suggestion that he grow a moustache before the release of UMAH to better the film’s prospects.
The friend adds, “Ajay is very keen that people from all sections of society watch his directorial debut as he’s poured his heart out in the film.”
When we quizzed him about it, Ajay preferred to shrug it off. “I’m growing a moustache because I felt like it.” Is it for the look of a film? “No.”
Devgan will be seen sporting his new fuzz in today’s episode of Zee TV’s Rock 'N' Roll Family.
