Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan is being launched in DVD format in the US after a sensational theatrical release that set a new record of the biggest opening weekend for a Bollywood film in North America.


The DVD, to be released on August 10, is timed to India's Independence Day and showcases the changing face of Bollywood, the enamoring on-screen partnership of the lead actors Shah Rukh and Kajol, behind-the-scenes features about the story, music from the film and more, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment said.


Special features of the DVD include Changing the Face of Bollywood, Working Together, The Music of My Name Is Khan, the Story of My Name Is Khan, Sajda Music Promo and Tere Naina Music Promo.


Two of Bollywood's biggest stars, Shah Rukh and Kajol, deliver powerful performances in this Karan Johar-directed film that proves true love knows no boundaries.


Rizwan Khan, an Indian man suffering from Asperger's syndrome, moves to San Francisco and meets a single mother named Mandira (Kajol). They fall in love against all odds, but fate and tragedy conspire to tear them apart.


Just when it appears as though all hope is lost, Rizwan embarks on a journey across America to win back the love of his life.

Bollywood film gives Avatar a box office scare

A Bollywood film with no special effects has almost beaten James Cameron's worldwide blockbuster Avatar at the Indian box office.



The film, My Name is Khan, grossed $US23 million ($AU26 million) on the subcontinent, just behind the $26 million ($AU30 million) earned by Avatar in a lesson for U.S studios on how to compete in the world’s most prolific movie market.


My Name is Khan tells the story, in Hindi and English, of a Muslim in San Francisco at the time of the September 11 attacks. The production by Fox-Star Studios India Pvt. and two Indian companies is the highest-grossing domestic film this year in India.


News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox - which made Avatar - Walt Disney Co. and Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. are now using local talent to produce Indian-language films as they try to crack a market that sold more than 3.2 billion movie tickets last year - more than double the U.S and Canada combined.


Ticket sales are expected to grow to 130 billion rupees ($US3 billion) by 2013 from 87.8 billion rupees last year, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers.


‘‘Hollywood studios realize that if they want to increase their revenue, they are going to struggle to do that in America,’’ said Mike Ellis, Asia Pacific president for the Motion Picture Association.


‘‘Nearly every single studio is already in India. They are definitely here for the long haul.’’


Triple Hollywood’s output


India’s film industry generated an estimated 107 billion rupees in revenue in 2008, and that is expected to grow by an average of 11.5 percent annually to 2013, PricewaterhouseCoopers said. Distributors released 1,325 movies, in Hindi and regional languages, in 2008, more than triple Hollywood’s output of 463, according to Netscribes (India) Pvt. Ltd.Admissions in the U.S. and Canada fell to 1.41 billion in 2009 from 1.57 billion in 2002, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners.


Box-office receipts have risen by an average of about 2 percent annually since 2002 while ticket prices increased 3.7 percent.That’s prompting Hollywood to look to China and India, the world’s fastest-growing major economies.


China’s economy grew by 11.9 percent in the first quarter compared with a year earlier, yet the government allows only 20 imported films a year.


India’s economy is expected to expand by 7.2 percent in the year ending March 31, according to a government forecast.


Sixty foreign films were released in India last year, earning a combined 3.8 billion rupees, according to a report by consulting firm KPMG.


Rupert Murdoch’s Fox-Star Studios plans to make as many as six Indian language movies a year, said Vijay Singh, chief executive officer.


65 cent tickets


My Name is Khan, featuring Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan, was produced with India’s Dharma Productions Pvt. and Red Chillies Entertainment.The average ticket price in India is 25 rupees (AU65 cents), the PricewaterhouseCoopers report said, while the average U.S. ticket price is $7.50, according to the theater owners association.


India’s middle class, with an annual disposable income of between $4,380 and $21,890, is expected to swell more than 10-fold to 583 million people by 2025, New York-based consulting firm McKinsey & Co. said in 2007.


Studios also will benefit from the growing number of screens in India. The first multiplex opened in New Delhi in 1997, and now there are more than 800 in India, the KPMG report said.


The dominant Hindi-language film industry is called Bollywood, a portmanteau word for Bombay and Hollywood. It released 242 movies last year, an increase from 229 the year before.


‘‘We all know the size and potential of Bollywood and the fact that it’s at the forefront of popular culture in India,’’ Singh said. ‘‘Our continuing focus will be to grow Hollywood in India.’’


Fox’s strategy starts with the perception that it is a filmmaker and not an investment banker paying for local productions, Singh said. The studio is involved from the beginning of the creative process through a film’s distribution.


‘‘Our plan in Bollywood is to get into co-production and not cut a big cheque,’’ Singh said. ‘‘We want to be actively involved.’’


Disney partnered with Yash Raj Films to release its first animated Hindi movie, Roadside Romeo, in 2008.


Disney said India is one of the largest markets it has invested in for local production.The company also is targeting audiences that speak regional languages such as Tamil and Telegu - a segment that generated box-office receipts of about 15.1 billion rupees, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers.


In March, Disney announced production of its first film in Telegu. The fantasy adventure, scheduled for release in January, also will be dubbed in Tamil.


‘‘Disney is committed toward building a family entertainment brand in India,’’ said Mahesh Samat, managing director of Walt Disney Co. India Pvt.


‘‘We will continue to tap into the local creative ecosystem to develop content which resonates with Indian kids and families.’’


Warner Bros. Pictures India signed deals in 2008 to make three movies with India’s People Tree Films and several regional-language movies with Ocher Studios. The company declined to comment, spokeswoman Deborah Lincoln said in an e- mail.


For decades, Hollywood tried to pry the market open with blockbusters dubbed in local languages, yet success was fleeting because Indians often don’t understand American culture, humor or slang, Thakkar said.


‘‘That experiment didn’t really work,’’ he said. ‘‘If they want to crack the Indian market, they had to become localized.’’

Imran Khan to star alongside SRK!!

Imran Khan's implausible performance in JAANE TU...has impressed one and all. All the biggie filmmakers of Bollywood are looking forward to work with the young lad.

And one such filmmaker is Karan Johar. If the buzz is to be believed than Karan has approached B-town's latest heartthrob Imran Khan to essay the character of a terrorist in his forthcoming Shah Rukh Khan starrer film MY NAME IS KHAN where SRK will be seen in the role of a NRI who later resorts to terrorism because of the difficult circumstances he faces. According to the hearsay, initially Ranbir was approached for the role, who for some reasons refused to be a part of it, which Imran will play now.

Apparently when Karan saw JTYJN he got enthralled by Imran's work and at once decided to approach Imran for his next outing MY NAME IS KHAN. However it is heard that Imran is rather cautious than excited to star alongside Baadshah of Bollywood and has been seeking advice from mamu (Uncle) Aamir for that matter.

The real reason why Karan Johar is turning into a blogger

"Kuch to blog kahenge, blogon ka kaam hai kehna…choda bekaar ki baton mein kahin beet na jaye…", puns Karan about his new blogging aspirations. He promises to be regular on his blog. "But not compulsive. I don't see myself blogging from my sets when I start shooting Khan or when I'm abroad for my various events."

Once a week on the blog is all you'll get of Karan. "I've a staff to take care of the blog. And I certainly won't be peering anxiously into it every day. And the blog isn't to discuss my daily routine or my sexuality, although both may crop up when the need arises. But I'm not turning blogger to blabber about my life. God knows, I do enough of that on a daily basis."

So is it lucrative? "You mean, am I getting paid to write the blog? Who's going to pay me to hear me talk on the net when there's so much of the Karan Johar wisdom being spewed in every possible place? No, I'm doing the blog for free."

The real reason why Karan wants to blog is because he needs to put his thoughts into writing rather than vocalizing them all the time. "I've always been a closet- writer. I've been offered newspaper columns which I almost did; but never got down to it. I feel a blog would be a good way to express my thoughts on cinema, things that don't routinely get space in the traditional media outlets these days."

But if you think Karan's rishta with the media is going to change, then think again. "My relationship with the media is an uneasy but permanent marriage. We may quarrel in the morning over breakfast. But we are friends at the end of the day before dinner. And everything goes back to normal the next morning."

MY NAME IS KHAN: Karan's next hit audio score!

There is no doubt that the audio albums of Karan Johar's films have had some outstanding songs, right from KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI to KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM. Even the songs of KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA (that was not as big a hit as the other two) achieved amazing popularity and sales volumes. So, what can we expect from his next directorial venture, the Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol starrer, KHAN / MY NAME IS KHAN?

Well, reliable media sources who have heard scratch tunes of two of the songs say that Karan Johar once again has super-hit music on his hands. As per exclusive details, the first composition 'Sajda' is to be rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. It is likely to be picturised as a background song when Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol get married.

The other song, 'Tere Naina', will be another background composition. The situation for the number is when SRK sees Kajol for the first time in the film. One understands that this particular song too will be rendered by a Pakistani singer.

To sum up in two words, the musical compositions by Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy will be sure fire hits, once the audio album is launched next year!

KJO's Birthday Plans

Post 35, admits dandy director Karan Johar, birthdays don’t hold much importance for him. So there won’t be any elaborate celebration today when Karan turns 36.

“I feel old, at least mentally. I am not so excited as I used to be earlier. There’s a very settling feeling at this point in life,” says KJO. He accepted wishes from friends last night, attended Jodhaa-Akbar’s success celebrations, and then went to party with his closests friends. “I wanted the party to be at a restaurant and not somebody’s house and we did that,” says Karan who’s busy with pre-production work on his next film, My Name is Khan. “My 36th birthday is full of challenges. It’s a new phase of my life. I have many wishes up my sleeve. This year I will have maximum releases and I will launch my SRK starrer towards the end of the year,” says the birthday boy whose most memorable birthday was his 25th on the sets of his directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. “It was in Ooty and we were shooting in a summer camp with many children, my parents and best friends Shah Rukh and Kajol. It was so much fun. It felt like a real birthday with all those children around,” he says.

And his wish for himself, today, “I seriously want to be in a relationship this year. Last 35 years I had nobody in my life, I was so caught up with my career. But now, I have decided, I will at least be in a relationship. And I am serious about it.”

Kabhi Naa Kabhi Haan

Kareena Kapoor can put her hopes of being cast in My Name Is Khan to complete rest. For finally Karan Johar’s first choice Kajol has agreed to do the film. Kajol gave the nod to the project on Thursday.

A source close to Kajol’s husband, Ajay Devgan, tells us, “Kajol indeed took a long time to take a call on her participation in Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, but the problem was that she had not heard the script in detail. This week, she took a long look at the script and finally said ‘yes’.”

“Karan and Kajol go back a long way. Their dosti is not only friendship but respect for each other as well. Kajol could not have refused the film outright,” the insider further says.

So how will Kajol adjust to the US schedule? Will her daughter Nysa accompany her? Wasn’t that one of the reasons why Kajol took long to give her nod of consent? “Well, that all will be sorted out. Kajol has worked out how to look after Nysa during that period. Whether Nysa will go with Kajol or not is still not known,” our source adds.

We sent a text message to KJo (as Karan is fondly called in the industry), but he did not reply.

My Name Is Khan, directed by Karan Johar, stars Karan’s best buddy, Shah Rukh (who co-produces My Name Is Khan) in the male lead.

The only time Shah Rukh and Kareena have been romantically paired earlier was in Asoka the Great (2001), which too was produced in part by Shah Rukh Khan.

Shah Rukh’s close buddy Karan Johar has challenged Shah Rukh’s acting abilities by asking him to play an autistic in his next, My Name is Khan. No doubt SRK will take inspiration from Dustin Hoffman, who played an autistic in Rain Man, a 1988 film by Barry Levinson, which tells the story of an abrasive, selfish yuppie, Charlie Babbitt, who discovers that his father has left all of his multimillion-dollar estate to his brother, Raymond, a savant, whom he never knew existed.

Shah Rukh did not take long to say ‘yes’ to Karan. Our well-placed source in Bollywood says, “SRK can’t wait for the film to begin. He is very excited about playing this different
character.” Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, which starts off in childhood. It is characterised by impaired communication, excessive rigidity, and emotional detachment.
“However, he will have to wait since My Name Is Khan has been delayed. Karan had allowed Aditya Chopra to start Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi first, so SRK will first free himself from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and then get on to this challenging role,” our source adds.

Friend indeed!

It's a known fact that Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra are not only professionally close but are also the best of friends.

Karan recently gave a proof of how good a friend he is to SRK and Aditya. Karan didn't think twice before giving away the dates that Shah Rukh had promised him for his upcoming film, Khan to Aditya Chopra who will soon start shooting for his romantic film, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Adtya Chopra had last directed Mohabbatein in 2000.

Karan Johar was ready to start shooting for Khan and had SRK's dates from May onwards.

Karan can't stop recalling his days when he assisted Aditya on the sets of his directorial debut, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Karan had also acted in the Shah Rukh-Kajol blockbuster.

Commenting on readily giving away SRK's dates to Aditya, Karan Johar says, "Adi, Shah Rukh and I are thick friends. I am extremely fond of Adi and very excited about the fact that that he is directing a film after so long. For us, star dates are a minor issue. I am more thrilled about Adi's film than mine. I did it more than happily."

Apparently, Kajol stars opposite SRK in Khan while Aditya has already finalised a 16-year-old female lead for Rab Ne Bana…

“I can never make a film without songs." - Karan Johar

In the city to promote a brand of watch, Karan Johar or KJo, as he is fondly called, willingly poses for the camera. “Although this is my first visit to the city, I’ve a lot of family friends here who are Mehtas, Shahs, and Patels.”

Currently, the glam director is busy working on his next ‘K’ venture titled Khan, starring his favourites — Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. So, will that also be shot abroad, like all his films? “Khan is about the intrinsic events of the character’s life that take place in America, so the film has to be shot there.” Dispelling rumours that the film is without songs, Karan says, “I can never make a film without songs. The only difference is that there will be background songs in the film and no lip syncs.”

From the mushy Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to the highly debated Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, criticism has always been a part of Karan’s career. “I have made a lot of movies over the years and would like to be known more as a filmmaker than anything else. As a director, I would give myself 6 out of 10. I’m not being humble but true. My films are aspirational, with real people in unreal situations. And the audience loves to relate to them.”

Having witnessed the film industry inside out since childhood, Karan feels great to be a part of the entertainment industry. After two seasons of having coffee with the stars on national television, the favourite host of people says he will be back soon. “I am taking a creative sabbatical now and concentrating more on making films. But I hope to be back with the chat show in a year or two,” says Karan.

There are a few strands of visible greys on this young director’s head now. So, how does it feel to be a super achiever at this age? “It feels great that people love you and expect from you. It’s a very satisfying feeling,” he says.

Successful and single, this good looking director is not planning to tie the knot anytime soon. “Why marry when I am happy single?” he asks, and adds, “Never say never. May be, someday I will get married, but right now it feels good to get up in the morning and find myself be married to my work.”

And what about the alleged link up with television czarina Ekta Kapoor, we wonder. “Oh, they are all rumours. I love Ekta and her passion, enthusiasm and vigour for work. It’s just a joke between the two of us that if we don’t find anyone, we will get married to each other,” he smiles. Would he ever make a television soap, then? “I am such a TV addict, I love to watch international serials. I would love to make TV serials. In fact, I would make my own Buniyaad someday,” he signs off.

Kajol's 'yes' without script!

After the good response to the music and the innovative promos of her husband Ajay Devgan's directorial debut venture, U, ME AUR HUM, Kajol is on cloud nine. She, along with her loving hubby is leaving no stone unturned to hype the movie further. Whether its reality shows, events or magazine launch, the couple has been seen all over in a bid to promote their movie. In fact, trade believes that U, ME AUR HUM is all set for an exciting start next month, when it hits the silver screen.

Things are really happening for Kajol on the professional front. As is known Kajol's next project, Karan Johar's, KHAN / MY NAME IS KHAN, is with her favourite co-star and friend Shah Rukh Khan. Their last two projects with Karan, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM have re-written box-office history. While Karan had already broken the news about Kajol's final approval, we were very keen to hear it from the top actress herself. "I could be the next newsreader!" - Karan Johar

Your year was filled with celeb interviews and shooting ads.
I'd agree with that. In 2007, I directed no films. But did many ads including the latest Alfred Dunhill. I'm the ambassador for their clothes lines. Then there was ICI paint where I shot with Kareena and Brew, the coffee, which I've just tied up. And Timond watches.

Wow that's quite a lot of you being visible.
I am sure somewhere ads enhance your brand value. People look at you for things other than your core profession. You just have to balance it out and make sure you don't burn yourself out. I'm cutting down on my chat-show activity in 2008. However, I will continue to do live chat shows. I'm now the official interviewer for ‘Dubai Lifestyle’ where I interviewed Maria Sharapova recently. My journey from a director to a member of the media has been interesting. I like to be interviewed as much as I like to interview. Who knows, I could be the next newsreader?

You started the cult of celebrity directors in Bollywood.
I apologize for that. It started with me walking into people's homes with my chat show ‘Koffee With Karan’. Everything else was an offshoot of that. Now, I've a parallel existence besides a filmmaker, as a talk-show host. Everything else followed.

Has Koffee With Karan enhanced you as a filmmaker?
To even pretend that I've grown as a filmmaker because of ‘Koffee With Karan’ would be stupid. I've always been a people's person .I love talking to people. And it's great fun when you're paid for your hobby.

And now you are an integral part of a new entertainment channel

Does the channel get the stars through you?
Why just me? There're lots of credible people, Prannoy Roy and his team, Samir Nair and his team. And then there's me. We definitely make a multi-star cast. I think everyone associated with the channel has the clout to get the biggest names from showbiz.

Did you miss making a movie in 2007?
Of course! But I've been so much part of brain-storming, structuring and planning that I had no time to miss my true vocation. My Dharma Productions will go into action in 2008. Tarun Mansukhani, our new blue-eyed boy at Dharma with a strong sense of loyalty, is directing our next production from March to be completed in July. He’s a rock-solid support to our production house. But my biggest support is my CEO who's also my best friend, Apoorva Mehta. He handles the entire financial structuring of my company. I wouldn't know what to do without him.

Please state more details about the Mansukhani film.
This film will star Abhishek, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham. Bobby Deol has a very special role in the film. This will be our only release in 2008. During 2009-2011 we hope to release at least three films per year. 2009 will see the release of our first animation film Coochie Coochie Hota Hai and the film that I'll direct which starts at the end of 2008 but will also release in 2009.

Do you miss a larger support system?
I've a great support system. People who've been with from my father’s (Producer Yash Johar) time. But I don't think a single day passes when I don't miss having him with me. I can never be the man, producer and leader that he was. I just wish to follow in his footsteps. For him generating goodwill was far more essential than making money. The biggest hit for him was a unit that said we want to work with you again.

2009 looks like a busy year for you.
Yes, because Siddharth Malhotra who worked with Sooraj Barjatya on Vivah and also assisted on my production Kal Ho Na Ho and Renzel D'Silva who wrote Rang De Basanti will also direct films for us.

Your favorite films of 2007?
I was bowled over by Chak De India and Om Shanti Om. It has truly been the year of Shah Rukh Khan. I also liked Anurag Basu's Life In A Metro. And I loved Mira Nair's The Namesake. I felt a strong sense of catharsis watching it. I'll always be grateful to Mira Nair. I remember hugging her tight after seeing the film.

Do you think 2007 was a rewarding year for Bollywood?
I think 2006 was a watershed year. 2007 was a decent follow-up year. There're so many exciting things happening. New actors and filmmakers are born every week. I loved Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, and Deepika Padukone. When I saw then I couldn't believe it was their first film. They're masters of the craft already. I think in 2001 Hrithik Roshan raised the bar for newcomers.You just have to be brilliant in your first film. Daunting, but true.

Tell me about your next directorial venture?
I'll start around August 2008. It's a project that needs careful handling. There's a lot of conjecture….is it about 9/11 terrorism. But at heart Khan—that's what I want to call it—is a love story. For the first time I'm not writing my own film. Shibani Bhatija is. She co-wrote Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna with me. It's my story but her screenplay. I'm enjoying the experience of watching the plot evolve from the outside. Every day we discuss the characters.

What prompted you to get someone else to write this film?
I just felt I might bring too much of myself to the film. I'm totally passionate and excited about directing it. But if I had written it, the tough core of the plot might've been compromised.

Your last directed film Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) seems to have made quite an impact.
When I look back on it, I feel all my films are accompanied by too much hype and hoopla. Audiences don't know what they're going for. KANK was too close their domestic reality and too distanced from the Karan Johar style. I can say with assurance it's exceptionally brave to make a 50-crore film like this. Even today, the maximum e-mails and smses come to me on KANK are from strangers. I get tons of letters on my website about how the movie has affected their lives. I did make mistakes in KANK. It's over-opulent and too lengthy. I made commercial compromises. But the emotional core connected. And when people said they couldn't STAND it they meant they were reacting to the characters.

So which film of yours are you the proudest of?
By far Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. It has made the maximum impact. Being Karan Johar is both an advantage and a disadvantage. That very brand name comes in the way of people expecting something different from me. But I love the work I do, love the industry I live in. I feel privileged to be in Indian cinema. Where else can you laugh sing cry, dance, and still be at work.

What about marriage for you?
Of course, I hate walking into an empty bedroom at night. There're large lonely moments. Fortunately, I've the best relationship possible with my mother. That makes up for every relationship I don't have. She is my best friend and a reason to look forward to the next day. Of course, I'd love to be in a relationship. But it has to be the one I completely believe in. I am 35 and I am not here for frivolous fun. My mom doesn't badger me about a Bahu. I live so many lives as a filmmaker that I forget my own emptiness. Too busy creating so many lives on screen to create a relationship for myself.

The best thing and the worst that happened to you in 2007?
I've always said I wasn't a businessman at heart. In 2007, I realized I have to make Dharma Productions a banner to contend with. 2007 was the year of personal ambitions for me. Worst thing? Nothing. Even my little skirmishes with Ram Gopal Varma and Anurag Kashyap made me happy.

What do you mean?
My life is my work. I'm happy when I've a problem with someone. It's a diversion. I'm so busy being affable, amiable accessible. Every year I like to have one person bad-mouthing me. It entertains me. When I patched up with Anurag within seconds I was so disappointed. Can you please find someone to say mean evil and mean things to say about me in 2008?

"I could be the next newsreader!" - Karan Johar

Your year was filled with celeb interviews and shooting ads.
I'd agree with that. In 2007, I directed no films. But did many ads including the latest Alfred Dunhill. I'm the ambassador for their clothes lines. Then there was ICI paint where I shot with Kareena and Brew, the coffee, which I've just tied up. And Timond watches.

Wow that's quite a lot of you being visible.
I am sure somewhere ads enhance your brand value. People look at you for things other than your core profession. You just have to balance it out and make sure you don't burn yourself out. I'm cutting down on my chat-show activity in 2008. However, I will continue to do live chat shows. I'm now the official interviewer for ‘Dubai Lifestyle’ where I interviewed Maria Sharapova recently. My journey from a director to a member of the media has been interesting. I like to be interviewed as much as I like to interview. Who knows, I could be the next newsreader?

You started the cult of celebrity directors in Bollywood.
I apologize for that. It started with me walking into people's homes with my chat show ‘Koffee With Karan’. Everything else was an offshoot of that. Now, I've a parallel existence besides a filmmaker, as a talk-show host. Everything else followed.

Has Koffee With Karan enhanced you as a filmmaker?
To even pretend that I've grown as a filmmaker because of ‘Koffee With Karan’ would be stupid. I've always been a people's person .I love talking to people. And it's great fun when you're paid for your hobby.

Not only that, the film went on to become one of the biggest hits of the 90's. It also consolidated the super-star power of the SRK-Kajol pair and established Karan as a top-notch director of the Hindi film industry.

Karan's career graph rose further with his next two films, KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM (2001) and KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA (2006). He ranks amongst the topmost Bollywood directors/producers like Yash Chopra, Aditya Chopra, Sooraj Barjatya.

Karan has off late been seen more on television, though news about his next project, obviously featuring close friends Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, has been doing the rounds, for a while. There have also been speculations that the project may not happen, as Kajol is not very keen on doing the film.

However, putting an end to all the canards, Karan says that he will soon be making a formal announcement regarding his next directorial venture, featuring his favourite pair. But before that he wants to have everything on paper.

Where did that one come from?” Reportedly, the film is based on terrorism. “It’s not! That’s another rumour. There’s no terrorism angle in my film. Yes, there’s a mention of the 9/11 episode, but nothing beyond that,” he clears the air.

The film has been delayed slightly. It was expected to start before the year came to a close, but will now roll in second quarter of 2008 and will hit the screens in April 2009. And yes, the film teams the golden combo – SRK and Kajol – after a hiatus. “I can’t confirm on Kajol’s presence till I talk to her. I’ve shifted my film ahead and need to sit with her on the fresh dates,” Karan reveals.

Meanwhile, Karan has started work on the animation version of KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, called KOOCHIE KOOCHIE HOTA HAI. Also, the Tarun Mansukhani-directed film, starring Abhishek, Priyanka and John, is expected to roll shortly.
