Russian President Dmitry meets Yash Chopra and Shahrukh Khan

They say art and culture has no language and this became apparent during the recent visit of the Russian President H.E. Dmitry A. Medvedev to India when he took out time from his two day visit to head to Yash Raj Studio.

The agenda was quite simple; it was to further strengthen the ties of the two countries with special emphasis on promoting cultural exchanges between Russia and India and for the President to get an opportunity to directly meet with the members of the Indian film industry.

Not many know that Indian Films have been very popular with Russian audiences for over 60 years since the time of the legendary Raj Kapoor. And this fond memory helped to get the President's meeting off to a very cordial beginning and set the mood for what followed.

Shahrukh Khan, Dmitri Medvedev, Yash Chopra, Kareena Kapoor

President Dmitry Medvedev was very happy that he was able to spend some time at the studio along with Yash Chopra and meet with the members of the Film Producers Guild of India and others. He said that his association and love for Indian films started way back in 1970 with Raj Kapoor's Shree 420, a popular and iconic film in Russia. He also said that cinemas are a common language and that he looked forward to receiving good proposals from the Indian Film Industry.

Even Yash Chopra was thrilled to meet the President as he said, "We are honoured to have the President of Russia, H.E. Medvedev, who took time off during his very short visit to India, to come visit us. Speaking on behalf of all of us present here and particularly the film fraternity, I am confident that this visit will most certainly help us to build on our already strong cultural and emotional relationship that has existed over many years. With this as our heritage, we should be looking at doing things collectively going forward."

While at the studio Yash Chopra invited the Russia President to the sets of Ra.One to meet Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor. This was a special occasion for the President, being the first time that he was on the sets of an Indian film shoot. In his unique and witty style, Shah Rukh Khan said that there is a great diversity of Russian and Indian culture which can be mutually drawn upon. He suggested that we should go there to learn the ballet and Russia should come here to learn the bhangra!

Exclusive: Check out SRK sporting a moustache and glasses in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Of late, the Baadshah of Bollywood- Shah Rukh Khan has been maintaining a low profile. After all, he has been busy shooting for two of his upcoming films namely Priyadarshan' Billoo Barber and Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. But you can't keep King Khan out of action and out of news for long. Can you?

Shah Rukh Khan was spotted shooting for Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi along with newcomer Anushka Sharma at the beautiful Golden Temple in Amritsar early this week. However, what caught our instant attention was the fact that King Khan was sporting a moustache during the shoot. This was a far cry from his look in any of his recent releases and did come as a pleasant surprise. SRK has earlier sported a moustache in films like Paheli, Army and English Babu Desi Mem to name a few. But his look in with specs et al in this Yash Raj production has taken everyone by surprise. This time around, looks like the actor is playing a matured character. Wonder what other surprises director Aditya Chopra has in store for all of us. As for newcomer Anushka, she looked every bit the Punjabi kudi.

Must say after seeing Shah Rukh in this new look, the curiosity to know more about Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi only increases for all die-hard SRK fans.

Sukhwinder is Shah Rukh's voice again!

'Chaiyya Chaiyya', 'Kuch Kariye' and 'Dard-e-Disco'! So, why are we mentioning the hit numbers of King Khan, rendered by the matchless, Sukhwinder Singh? Well, there is a reason and a very good one too!

It is a well known fact that whenever Sukhwinder has lent his vocals for a song picturised on Shah Rukh Khan, it has turned out to be a blockbuster. Whether, it was the entertaining dance number atop a train, 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' (DIL SE) or the most recent 'Dard-e- Disco' (OM SHANTI OM), the Sukhwinder-SRK 'jodi' has always belted out chart-scorchers! And now the good news is that the same 'jodi' is back once again to enthrall us all and this time around the composers are the talented duo, Salim-Sulaiman. Yes, it is the same combination that gave us the (unofficial) National Sports anthem, 'Kuch Kariye' (CHAK DE! INDIA) which can be heard even now at almost every victory celebrations featuring Indian teams.

Well, Salim-Sulaiman has once again roped in Sukhwinder Singh to render two of their compositions, to be picturised on Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra's upcoming RAB NE BANA DI JODI. One hears that the songs were recorded recently and news is that they are both awesome tracks!

Yash Chopra honoured with the highest civilian award

Recognized with Legion d' Honneur for his role as an artiste of cinema and a cultural Ambassador!!

Yash Chopra, one of modern Indian cinema's most shining lights, was formally bestowed with France's highest civilian award, the "Officer de la Legion d' Honneur" (Officer of the Legion of Honour) at a glittering ceremony in Delhi. The French President, Nikolas Sarkozy, had announced this award and conferred the title upon Yash Chopra. Yash Chopra has thus joined a very select list of awardees, including such luminaries from the Indian cultural sphere as the legendary Satyajit Ray, sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, India's nightingale Lata Mangeshkar and megastar Amitabh Bachchan.

The letter from the French ambassador, M. Jerome Bonnafont, announcing the award said that it was not just for Chopra's "contribution to cinema as an art and cultural industry" and his "dedication to promote young filmmakers" but also in recognition of his efforts to foster the spirit of "collaboration between France and India in the field of audiovisual arts." The distinction also recognized Yash Chopra's contribution to cultural diversity and making Indian cinema a global force to reckon with.

Even though awards are not new to him, Yash Chopra was delighted to receive the highest honour of a country where arts and culture are central to the way of life. Reacting to the award he said, "I am honoured to be recognized by the Republic of France as a cultural ambassador for my country. I am very glad that our efforts at making Indian cinema a global phenomenon are being saluted by France, a country that has itself a long and glorious history as a nation of passionate lovers of art and culture. I accept this award humbly and thank President Sarkozy for deeming me worthy of his nation's highest honour."

Heavy rains destroy SRK's 'RNBDJ' sets

Aditya Chopra who is back to the director’s seat after eight long years had to go through a heavy loss before the completion of his movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi . Chopra commenced shooting from May 16 at Filmcity. A huge set was constructed in film city where Chopra was shooting with Shah Rukh and his new actress recently. Unfortunately the set has been destroyed due to the heavy rains.

It is believed that Rs 4 crores was spent to build the set. When contacted YFR spokesperson Monika confirms, “Yes it’s true that the set which was erected for RNBDJ has been destroyed due to heavy rains. They started shooting on May 16 and finished that shooting schedule long back so the destruction of the set does not matter. They have finished the schedule in film city and they are now shooting in Yash Raj studio.”

Setbacks and losses are not new for big films. Tragedy is a constant companion in the film production business. It can be recalled that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was shooting in Film City when the sets at the studio caught fire and the total gear of the movie was destroyed.

RNBDJ is Shah Rukh’s third film with Aditya Chopra after Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Mohabbatein and film buffs would like to see the magic being recreated on celluloid.

Saif disappointed and hurt over the way Tashan shaped up

Saif shot off a missive to Aditya Chopra expressing disappointment about the way his role in Tashan shaped out and about how it was edited

Letters appear to be the latest fad in B-Town. After Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s letter to Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan has now dashed off a missive to Aditya Chopra and Yash Raj Films expressing his disappointment and hurt over the way Tashan shaped up.

Says a source, “Saif believes in speaking his mind if he feels strongly against something and then, moving on.

When Tashan released, he was unhappy with the way the film had turned out.

He felt that not only had his role turned out to be quite different from the narration given but that it had also been chopped quite a bit at the editing table. Kareena and he were shocked at Tashan’s dismal turnout.”

Although the film was released in April, the timing of the letter makes you wonder whether this is Saif’s way of ensuring that he doesn’t get the short end of the stick again with his next YRF film which is ready for release.

The source adds, “Saif dashed off a letter to Adi telling him all he thought about Tashan and his role in it. Saif wrote about how he felt let down by the film. It was an emotional letter — revealing Saif’s hurt and disappointment.

Also, he felt that Yash Raj’s next, Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic, directed by Kunal Kohli, looked promising.

This time, he requested Kunal to show him the film before its release. Kunal did that. Saif loved the film.”

Saif doesn’t deny writing a letter to Adi but adds, “Aditya and I communicated. That’s it.

I did feel my role didn’t come across as well as it did on paper. Aditya and I spoke about it and we agreed that it was best for the overall narrative of the film.

I think we have all moved on to other things and we should let this matter rest. Right now, I am really looking forward to Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic.”

Ashish Singh, VP — Yash Raj says, “There’s no truth in this. Saif leads in our next, TPTM and came down specially for the launch in spite of being in Australia and being unwell. He is also an integral part of Roadside Romeo and YRF cherishes our relationship with him.”

''Yash Raj Films is home for me''

Who would think that 13 years had passed since the first time this jodi came together? At that time, the director was merely the scion of a great filmmaking family and the star was best known for taking on negative roles that no one else would. Then the magic they conjured up in their first film together, redefined Hindi cinema and set them on their respective paths to the heights of glory.

Now 13 years after DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE first took the country by storm, and eight years after MOHABBATEIN, the jodi of Aditya Chopra, superstar director, and Shah Rukh Khan, superstar actor were together again, this time for the latest from Aditya Chopra as director, RAB NE BANA DI JODI with newcomer Anushka Sharma who joined in on the first day of shoot. And it was evident that Shah Rukh Khan was approaching this new role with his old comrade, with as much gusto and passion as ever.

'Starting the first day of shooting is what still gives me goose bumps like nothing else', said King Khan. 'And to make films with Yash Raj, that too when Adi is directing, is an experience that is more than 100% exciting. Yash Raj Films is, and will always be, home for me and who doesn't love coming home? Yash ji and Adi have always given me roles that have gotten me love and appreciation from fans all over the world. And this time Adi has again written a character for me to play that I think will become as beloved as Raj of DDLJ was. I am going to be trying as usual to hit it out of the park with RAB NE BANA DI JODI.'

And with these words, Shah Rukh Khan signed off from the first day of shooting, conveying to the world that something special was in the air, the most awaited film of the year was rolling as planned, and the Aditya Chopra - Shah Rukh Khan jodi were again creating that little bit of magic! Newcomer Anushka Sharma who was eagerly looking forward to this day ...the first day of shoot, for her the dream has just begun!

Yash Chopra was also present on the sets of RAB NE BANA DI JODI on the first day of shoot to bless his son and the unit at the onset of this new production.

Shah Rukh is all set to prove himself

For those who think that Shah Rukh Khan cannot play anything beyond stereotypical characters, think again.

Shah Rukh’s close buddy Karan Johar has challenged Shah Rukh’s acting abilities by asking him to play an autistic in his next, My Name is Khan .

No doubt SRK will take inspiration from Dustin Hoffman, who played an autistic in Rain Man (1988). Rain Man is a 1988 film by Barry Levinson, which tells the story of an abrasive, selfish yuppie, Charlie Babbitt, who discovers that his father has left all of his multimillion-dollar estate to his brother, Raymond, a savant, whom he never knew existed.

Shah Rukh did not take long to say ‘yes’ to Karan. Our well-placed source in Bollywood says, “SRK can’t wait for the film to begin. He is very excited about playing this different character.” Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, which starts off in childhood. It is characterised by impaired communication, excessive rigidity, and emotional detachment.

“However, he will have to wait, since My Name Is Khan has been delayed. Karan had allowed Aditya Chopra to start Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi first, so SRK will first free himself from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (opposite the 19-year old Bangalorean newcomer Anushka Sharma) and then get on to this challenging role,” our source adds.

A source close to Shah Rukh says, “He’s adventurous and dares to take risks, he dares to be different, and he dares to break all rules. It is a misconception that he is repetitive and does not like to play different characters. His performances in Swades and Chak De! India are the best examples to prove this point. My Name Is Khan will be a trump card in SRK’s repertoire. Playing an autistic person will be challenging. Shah Rukh will have to do a lot of homework.”

'Anushka has the spark’

If Farah Khan had SRK romancing 21-something Deepika Padukone, Aditya Chopra has gone a step ahead and got him a 19-year-old leading lady.

Aditya, who last directed Mohabbatein and is rumouredly making an Indian take on My Fair Lady , has signed model Anushka Sharma for the lead role opposite Shah Rukh. And in typical Adi style, barred her from speaking about the film!

However, people who have worked with the model earlier say there is a star quality about the girl. Bangalore’s style guru Prasad Bidapa says Anushka’s star quality was evident even when she was brought to him by her parents when she was just 13.

“She was very tall and beautiful even then,” recalls Prasad. “Her parents were keen she should do some modelling without losing out on her studies, so she started off very easy and gently. Even then, one look at her and you knew she would hit the big time soon. Her and SRK’s age gap won’t matter, we are used to that in our films.”

As Yash Chopra says about her, “We were looking for someone who could truly embody the spirit of small town Punjab and Anushka fit in perfectly. And while she has no previous acting experience, we have seen that unique spark in her that makes us confident that she will be a standout even opposite SRK.”

Designer Wendell Rodricks is one of those who say he spotted a special something in the young model. “I recognised that quality she had – innocent yet beautiful – and took her to Mumbai to the fashion week to model for me. Anushka has an expressive face that can look tragic at times and youthful and shy at other times.”

Present imperfect

After the debacle of Tashan at the box-office, Aditya Chopra is very cautious about future projects that are being planned. Our source in the industry informs us, "Aditya Chopra does not want to commission any more projects for some time now. The failure of their projects has rattled the Yash Raj camp which has probably forced Adi to do some rethinking on the choice of scripts for their future projects. Yash Chopra, who had taken a back seat and had left all the commissioning to Adi, has begun taking interest in the new scripts that are coming to Yash Raj."

Reportedly, the directors who are already working with Yash Raj and have three-film contract may continue with their projects. While Shimit Amin, Kabir Khan, Siddharth Anand and Shaad Ali are already working on their next project, no new projects will be announced till Aditya Chopra completes his directorial venture which goes on the floor later this week.

It may be noted that Yash Raj has not renewed its contract with directors like Kunal Kohli who is now a co-producer, Sanjay Gadhvi moved out of the camp after Dhoom 2, and Bachna Aye Haseeno will be Siddharth Anand's last film with Yash Raj films.

When Aditya Chopra took over the reigns of the company as the creative head he had modelled the banner around Ram Gopal Varma's Factory and wanted the banner to have at least one release a month, but 2007 has not been really good for Yash Raj films which made them sit back and do some rethinking on the kind of films they want to make in the future. And, a film like Tashan is definitely not going to be part of their plan for the future. The only announcement that one might hear in the near future is the return of Yash Chopra as a director.

Bangalore model opposite Shahrukh in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Bangalore model, 19-year-old Anushka Sharma has been identified to play the female lead opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra’s third film as director RAB NE BANA DI JODI.

Said Yash Chopra, "We were looking first and foremost for someone who could truly embody the spirit of small-town Punjab and we know we have found her in Anushka. And while she has no previous acting experience, we have seen that unique spark in her that makes us confident that she will be a standout even opposite Shah Rukh."

RAB NE BANA DI JODI will go on floors on 16th May and will hit theatres worldwide on 12th December.

Yash Chopra to direct Madhuri Dixit

Though Madhuri Dixit's comeback vehicle AAJA NACHLE under Yash Raj banner could not click at box-office but that didn't stop the ace actress to spell her charm.

In fact she is gearing up for her other projects. According to the latest buzz in media she will soon be seen once again showcasing her acting performance par excellence in yet another Yash Raj project. Yes, according to the latest grapevine it is heard that Yash Raj banner is once again producing a film featuring Madhuri as lead and the details are being worked out. But the striking fact which will make this news more elating is that Yash Chopra may direct this project himself. And whenever this ace director is at the helm of affairs he is a sure shot winner. His last directorial venture was VEER ZAARA starring SRK, Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherji bagging almost all the awards in Yash Raj kitty.

So all you Yash Raj film buffs, your eager await will finally come to an end and hope we will rejoice once again in the old magic with the combination of Yash Raj and the graceful Madhuri.

SRK-Aditya's RAB NE... from mid-May

One of the most exciting projects to have been announced this year is the third time teaming up of the scion of the Yash Raj empire, ace director Aditya Chopra and Bollywood's global superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

The last two ventures that these two power giants of Bollywood came together for were, DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE and MOHABBATEIN, both of which struck gold at the ticket window. An amazing stat about the team's first venture, DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE is that the film is still running at Bombay's Maratha Mandir in its 645th combined week and has netted an astonishing 11.80 crores from the city (excluding Thane). DDLJ still leads King Khan's latest blockbuster, OM SHANTI OM by about 30 lakhs! Amazing, isn't it?

Coming to the project which forced Shah Rukh Khan to cut short his much deserved vacation (post the triumph of CHAKDE! INDIA and OM SHANTI OM), RAB NE BANA DI JODI, the film is all set to go before the camera in mid-May. And contrary to speculations, no lead heroine (not even Rani Mukherjee) has been finalized and the search for a new face opposite King Khan continues.

'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'

The wait is over. Eight years after he last directed a film, Aditya Chopra is back helming a Yash Raj Films production. Even as his directorial debut DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE continues its record breaking run in its 13th year, Aditya is ready to direct his third film.

After directing his second film, MOHABBATEIN, back in 2000, Aditya had taken a conscious break from direction to set up and develop India's first studio model making Yash Raj Films a name to reckon with. In the years that followed, YRF, under the keen eye of Aditya, produced such blockbusters as DHOOM, DHOOM 2, HUM TUM, BUNTY AUR BABLI, SALAAM NAMASTE, FANAA and CHAK DE INDIA. While Aditya was the creative producer in all these films, he also kept up with his creative juices by writing his father Yash Chopra's directorial venture VEER-ZAARA in 2004, as well as the stories of other films.

Aditya's third directorial venture will be titled RAB NE BANA DI JODI and will star the formidable Shah Rukh Khan... indeed the jodi of Adi and SRK will once again be a treat for film audiences the world over.

Aditya will introduce a new girl opposite King Khan in RAB NE BANA DI JODI. The hunt for a new girl is currently in progress.

The film, to be produced by Yash Chopra, will be written and directed by Aditya Chopra. Shooting for the film will commence in May and RAB NE BANA DI JODI will release by the end of 2008.

Karan Johar's Media Mantra's

One of the nicest — and mutually profitable — friendships here is that of Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. K Jo may be right up there in the marquee as a film-maker but he is still sporting enough to take care of Shah Rukh’s clothes, without ever feeling that he’s too big to be doing this now.

“I do clothes only for Shah Rukh, nobody else,” Karan is clear about that. “I connect with what Shah Rukh wants. I’ve done his clothes in Main Hoon Na (remember the simple but distinct sweater and scarf look?) and in Om Shanti Om. I always say Yash Uncle and Farah are two makers for whom, whenever they work with Shah Rukh, I will always do the clothes. I do Shah Rukh’s clothes in any case. I’m always shopping for him. I love doing it as a hobby.

“I loved doing the clothes of Om Shanti Om. Farah was so well-researched, she knew just what she wanted. Every time I fought with her — like I’d say, Farah, you want to give him this gold jacket for God’s sake — her answer would be, just shut up and give it, I know what my tones are. And when I saw it on screen the gold jacket looked great. Shah Rukh looked fantastic in the film. In the first half there wasn’t one wrong note. I had great fun doing it. I hope I get another job!”

One might say that today it is a privilege for anybody to do Shah Rukh’s clothes. But Karan is not ‘anybody’; he is a huge celebrity himself. One might think Karan benefits from his association with such a big star but if you really look at their friendship, I for one would say that Shah Rukh has equally gained from having Karan for a friend.

Today, especially after the blockbuster win of Om Shanti Om, a dreary charge against SRK is that he is media-savvy, like it is a gaali. Anybody who can’t get a good press (currently, Rishi Kapoor and most of the Saawariya satellites) sneer over the two words, ‘media savvy’ like it is a flaw in your personality. But the truth is, Shah Rukh was not always media-savvy. When he made his first film, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, and flopped on his face, he had got the kind of furious backlash that Sanjay Leela Bhansali got this year. Shah Rukh had no friends in the media, he had an issue with most of them (yours truly included) over laughingly trivial items, and right up to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it was close friend Karan Johar who spoke warmly to the media on his friend’s behalf.

If Shah Rukh Khan has changed for the better you have to credit buddy Karan for the subtle influence he has had over the actor. Hear Karan’s refreshing views on the media and you’ll get an idea of where Shah Rukh has picked up some important lessons.

Says Karan, “Handling the media is really an art, that too requires a certain course.

“You cannot deny the power of the media, you cannot deny that they are a huge platform you need to be on when you have to promote your film or speak about yourself, you cannot deny that they make you the brand you are and you reap the benefits of that. I work in tandem with the media, I like to be there for them just as they have always been there for me. Yes, there are some bad apples but there are those bad apples in any industry, any profession, why just the media?

“When critics praise you, you’re happy. When they criticise you, you say they’re biased. Why can’t we accept that perhaps they just didn’t like your film? I can, even if it does hurt. If tomorrow you write against my film, I’m not going to be loving you for that second, but the next day I’ll wake up and say, ok, I must respect her opinion, I have so many of my own.

“Yes, the electronic media is in your face, the paparazzi is emerging, it’s annoying when you go to an event and you have a hundred cameras on you. But would you not want those hundred people around you? Would you like it if they ignored you and ran after someone else? No, I wouldn’t. I’m sorry to report, I’d be shattered, upset and want to break my head against the nearest wall! I like the shutterbugs when I walk the red carpet and I like the fact that they’re screaming my name for sound bytes. If they didn’t, I’d wonder what went wrong!

“We need the media,” concludes Karan. And you know just how much Shah Rukh has got from Karan when the film-maker says, “Let’s not pretend that we’re going to go out there and bash them because we sound cool at a party. We don’t.

    “Media bashing is really passé!”

    Thanks, pal.

Madhuri's comeback film runs into trouble in Mayawati's state

Even as positive reports trickled in for Madhuri Dixit's Aaja Nachle, the film was slapped with a total ban in Uttar Pradesh and in the National Capital Region of Noida. Chief Minsiter Mayawati said, the ban was in keeping with the sentiments of the various dalit groups that found certain languages and lyrics in the film objectionable. There were also reports that Mayawati has requested the Prime Minister to impose a ban on the film all over the country.

The Punjab chief minister has also imposed a ban on the film not wanting to fan communal tensions.

Reacting to the news, Yash Chopra, Chairman, Yash Raj Films rendered an unconditional apology, "It was not our intention to hurt the feelings of any individual or community of our great nation. If we have inadvertently hurt the sentiments of anybody I apologise for the same and have taken immediate remedial action by deleting the line from the prints of Aaja Nachle from all over the country. This line has been deleted in all the theatres today."

So far, members of the Indian Justice Party staged protests outside some theatres in Delhi. There were protests in Lucknow as well. Director Anil Mehta appeared on certain TV channels, apologising for any grief caused to any section of society, inadvertently. Though he expressed surprise at why the Censor Board did not find the dialogues or lyrics objectionable. However he offered to remove the objectionable words from the film, while lyricist Piyush Mishra too offered to remove controversial words from the lyrics. He also requested Mayawati to watch the film first before pressing on for a nation-wide ban on the film.
