The tremendous appreciation as also the tremendous critical acclaim this film has garnered will ensure a long, successful run for the film. Given its strong opening and equally strong reports, a few distributors/exhibitors this writer spoke to were sure that the multiplexes would increase its shows [from 2/3/4 to 7/8] from Saturday itself.
C KKOMPANY had a dull start, opening to a 20% response. The reports range from average to dull… CHAMKU had a poor start, with the opening being in the range of 7%-10% at some screens. Reports are poor… As for MUKHBIIR, no prizes for guessing the opening numbers!

B.O. Update: Independence Day holiday boosts business
On the other hand, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO had an average to below average start at multiplexes, but was better at small centres. The reports in a few circuits seem encouraging and the business might show an upward trend at places. Meanwhile, SINGH IS KINNG began its second week with super-strong collections in almost all circuits.

SINGH IS KINNG has had the widest release ever for a Hindi film. It has opened at 1700 screens worldwide [as per Studio 18], 1400 in India and 300 in Overseas. The opening weekend, as things stand now, should be in the range of Rs. 23cr. to Rs. 25 cr. nett in India and the first week should close at Rs. 42 cr. to Rs. 45 cr. nett in India. All signs of a Blockbuster!
Meanwhile, the film had a stupendous start in U.K. last night, when paid previews were held. The film collected close to £ 60,000 on Thursday night. Fabulous!

The distributors, who've invested their hard-earned money on a film, never mince words when a film bombs. And the tone only gets better [excited/happy/thrilled] when the film hits the bulls eye. I've realized this over the years. In fact, the excitement shows in their body language!
This week, as I spoke to the various distributors of KISMAT KONNECTION, I realized that the film had passed the weekend test with distinction marks. The weekdays did witness the normal drop, but it wasn't alarming, as a section of the trade was hoping it would be.
UTV has placed a lot of trust in Shahid Kapur. Besides distributing KISMAT KONNECTION globally, the corporate house has two more films lined up with Shahid - Vishal Bhardwaj's KAMINEY and Ken Ghosh's STAR [will it be a new title, Ken?].
Releasing the film at 720 screens in India and 200 abroad was a carefully thought of strategy. It also takes Shahid into a different league. He's above the Abhisheks and Johns, in the sense that a solo Shahid starrer has fetched a flying start at the box-office, for the second time in a row. Generally, solo Abhishek and solo John starrers don't.
As things stand today, KISMAT KONNECTION is a plus film for sure. The first week theatrical business should be in the range of Rs. 20 - Rs. 23 cr. nett, which is commendable for a film that had Shahid Kapur as the sole driving force. This, despite a leading multiplex chain not screening the film.
I genuinely feel sad for RGV. He's a true genius, in my opinion. But what is he churning out intermittently? CONTRACT is such a letdown from a maker who has delivered such fine films in the past. And the audience apathy showed in its business.
The collections are so poor, I'm sure RGV must've got a fright when he must've checked the day-wise business reports. This one's a debacle!

Is 'J.T.Y.J.N.' 2008's biggest Hit so far?
It was meant to be a clash of the titans, but the battle royale tilted more in favor of one film from Day 1 itself -- JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA. The headlines screamed, 'Harman versus Imran'. The soothsayers predicted a big start for LOVE STORY 2050. The promotion of this sci-fi film was also befitting its stature.
But, over the years, I've realized that the viewers never get carried away by the hype and hoopla. They go by their instinct. If their heart is set on a film, there's no stopping it. Actually, the industry is always clueless about what the audience wants. We can only indulge in wild guesswork. Kabhi nishaana sahi baithta hain, kabhi nahin.
Right now, it's a JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA wave across the nation. I haven't seen such enthusiasm amongst exhibitors quite frankly. The industry was in the I.C.U. and JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA has come as the sanjeevani booti.
I'd use just one word to describe its business -- Rocking! Friday, Saturday, Sunday, the opening weekend of this teenage prem kahani was superb everywhere. Monday usually witnesses a drop in business, but Monday [75%], Tuesday [70%] and Wednesday [60%+] business only made the trade jump with joy. A few exhibitors tell me that they're increasing the shows in its second weekend, owing to the public demand.
At the rate at which JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is speeding, it should emerge a bigger hit than TAARE ZAMEEN PAR and the biggest hit of the year so far, in terms of economics.
Now LOVE STORY 2050. Anil Ambani's Big Pictures sent me a note on the extensive release strategy of the film on the eve of its release. It's a big film and that explains a big release. So far, so good!
Now let's talk hardcore business! As per the weekend statement sent by the producers to 'Bollywood Hungama', the film has grossed Rs. 7.70 crores in its opening weekend and the week should end at Rs. 11.5 / Rs. 12 crores nett. Which, in the first place, is not a hefty figure keeping in mind the number of prints in circulation. Two, assuming that the week closes at Rs. 12 crores nett [I am being optimistic, since the film dropped drastically from Monday onwards], the distributors' share [after deducting theatre rentals] would be approximately Rs. 5.50 crores. And the shares would only decline as the weeks go by.
Remember, the pricing [Rs. 40 cr., includes prints + promotion expenses] wouldn't be a cause for concern if the film enjoyed strong reports. But it doesn't!
In such a scenario, will the distributors recover the huge price they've invested in the film? Sure, the sale of Satellite and Home Video rights may ensure a chunk, but the theatrical business in India [below the mark] and Overseas [weak] is disappointing. Will it pick up in its second weekend? I doubt! The JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA wave is too strong, too omnipotent, simply unstoppable!

B.O. Update: 'Jaane Tu' takes a flying start, 'L.S. 2050' dull
On the other hand, the response to LOVE STORY 2005 was evident during the paid previews on Thursday night. Friday morning, the results only became more evident, as the film opened to a 25% response and by noon shows, was in the 35% - 40% range. The reports of the film are below the mark and this big-budget sci-fi venture will have a tough time sustaining itself in the coming days.

Looks can be deceptive

A few days ago, I was having this real lonnnnnnnng conversation with a prominent corporate house personnel and while discussing the low turnout at cineplexes these days, he came up with a valid observation that rang a bell. "It's getting increasingly difficult for the common man to shell out Rs. 200 for a ticket. The promos can be deceptive. The outcome of any film is solely dependant on word of mouth these days," he remarked. I endorse this viewpoint.
Come to think of it, the promos of DE TAALI, HAAL-E-DIL and KHUSHBOO were truly eye-catching. Besides, the producers of these films promoted their products to the optimum. But look what happened!
Speaking for myself, I had pinned a lot of hopes on DE TAALI. I looked forward to the film with great enthusiasm. But I was grossly disappointed when I watched the film. The script just didn't hold your attention, it lacked the grip. That's precisely why I am not surprised at its non-happening status at the b.o.
While a few plexes of Mumbai and a handful of cities showed an encouraging start, the opening elsewhere was way below the mark. There weren't sparks on Saturday or Sunday either and like it happens with most films, the business was on a decline from Monday onwards. At mini-metros and smaller centres, it faced rough weather from Day 1 itself.
HAAL-E-DIL went completely unnoticed. It had great music, stunning locales and a fresh cast -- a combo that has worked so well in the past. But the feedback to the film was more than evident at the premiere screening on Thursday night itself.
However, what came as a rude shock was the poor turnout at cineplexes. It was more of a reality check for all those who were of the opinion that good music alone can guarantee an initial at the ticket window. This film is a nightmare for its investors!
As for KHUSHBOO, the film was sidelined completely. It never got the right show timings and worse, it was never the first choice of moviegoers this weekend. The ratio of flops only got bigger last Friday!

- Akshay Kumar – in top form after a string of hits.
- Saif Ali Khan – riding high after RACE.
- Kareena Kapoor – stronger than ever after JAB WE MET.
- Anil Kapoor – back with a bang, post WELCOME and RACE.
- Add to it the name that once guaranteed house full boards from Day 1 itself – Yash Raj. Yet, TASHAN failed to drive into the viewer’s heart.
But if the movie happens to be a big-budget extravaganza starring the high and mighty or is helmed by a top notch story teller, the cell phone rings incessantly. Last Friday onwards, right till the time of writing this piece, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing. Expectedly, the discussions were limited to TASHAN, just TASHAN, only TASHAN.
Everyone I spoke to is in a state of shock. What went wrong? Let’s analyze…
A leading North India distributor/exhibitor and I got into a discussion over the financial implications of its no-show at multiplexes. “Do you think Yash Raj would be affected by a Rs. 8-10 crore loss? It won’t pinch them one bit,” he opined.
Agreed, Yash Raj has made a fortune with a string of hits, but in this business [or any business for that matter], every penny counts. TASHAN has cost ‘x’ amount to make and whether you accept it or not, the no-show at multiplexes means that they’ve lost out on a good chunk of revenue. Had the film opened at the plexes, the losses would’ve been controlled/minimal.
But more than anything else, TASHAN has hit the credibility of Yash Raj hard. Last year, RGV faced a major crisis when RGV KI AAG was mauled, ridiculed and written off. I saw and heard similar negative talk doing the rounds of the industry for TASHAN.
Yash Raj’s last three films [JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM, LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG and AAJA NACHLE] were forgettable ventures. But TASHAN will not be erased from our memory. Its non-performance will haunt us all through this year!
