Aamir unplugged

Aamir Khan is going through the best phase, professionally. "No one can predict which way the pendulum will swing, before a film releases. But JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA has fared beyond my expectations. It's a JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA wave right now, like it was when BOBBY had released. The euphoria was also witnessed during QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, MAINE PYAR KIYA and KAHO NAA… PYAAR HAI. I only wish Chachajaan [late Nasir Husain] was alive to share the happiness. He was very close to Imran," Aamir tells me as we meet again for a heart-to-heart conversation.

    Read on…

With Imran's debut vehicle proving a major hit, is Aamir guiding his nephew how to go about in his career? "I would never do that. It's important to take your own decisions. You must learn to walk without crutches. Right from the start of my career, I took my own decisions… I made mistakes, but those were my mistakes. I think, I've learnt more from my failures than hits and I would advice Imran the same," Aamir states.

But a number of people feel that if one wants to sign Imran, it has to be via Aamir. True? "Yeah, that's what everyone feels. In fact, a number of people do call up, enquiring about Imran, but I tell them, 'Yeh lo number, Imran ko khud phone karo'," he laughs.

While on JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA, Aamir has incorporated a song that was deleted from the final version. "It's my favorite number, but Mansoor, Abbas and I took a call jointly. We felt the song was only making the film lengthier. But since the results are out, the song has been added in its third week. Initially, we thought of retaining it for just one week. But looking at the feedback, we may stretch it to three weeks. However, let me add, the song will not be a part of the final cut in the DVD. It will be featured in the unseen portions," Aamir divulges.

With GHAJINI complete and slated for release in November, Aamir will begin shooting for Rajkumar Hirani's film from August onwards. "It's called 3 IDIOTS. We didn't get the title [IDIOTS]… I am looking forward to working with Madhavan and Sharman Joshi [the RANG DE BASANTI team]. Kareena is now doing the film," the soft-spoken actor states.

The topic moves on to his next project. Has he thought of his next directorial venture? "Not yet! I haven't started looking for stories either. Earlier, I was busy with GHAJINI, then the release of JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA took most of my time," Aamir confesses. But the buzz is, Aamir intends casting Bachchan Sr. in his film. "I was at a loss of words when Mr. Bachchan said that he would love to work in a film directed by me. He's my favorite actor. It would be a privilege to direct him, but like I said, I haven't zeroed on a subject yet," Aamir says.

What about DELHI BELLY? Reportedly, the film will be made in English, not Hindi. "That's true! We are targeting at the global audience. I don't want it to be a bilingual [Hindi, English]. We tried that earlier [MANGAL PANDEY], but it didn't work," he says. With Ranbir Kapoor not part of the project anymore, will Imran step in? "Ranbir couldn't do the film due to date hassles. As for Imran, let's see. We haven't taken a call yet," Aamir states.

Uncle Aamir gifts a BMW to Nephew Imran

Uncle Aamir is so much so pleased with JTJYN's stupendous success that he decided to appreciate his nephew Imran in a different style. Recently Mamu Aamir gifted his oh-so cute Bhanja (nephew) Imran Khan a white BMW. The BMW, which Aamir gifted Imran is amongst the latest models in the market costing close to Rs. 50 lakh.

Imran is extremely fond of cars and Aamir was well aware of this. Therefore Aamir thought that this would be the best way to congratulate Imran on his spanking new success with his debut film JAANE TU YA JAANE NA. Imran, who wasn't expecting anything like a BMW, was ecstatic with Mamu's wonderful gesture.

Imran Khan to star alongside SRK!!

Imran Khan's implausible performance in JAANE TU...has impressed one and all. All the biggie filmmakers of Bollywood are looking forward to work with the young lad.

And one such filmmaker is Karan Johar. If the buzz is to be believed than Karan has approached B-town's latest heartthrob Imran Khan to essay the character of a terrorist in his forthcoming Shah Rukh Khan starrer film MY NAME IS KHAN where SRK will be seen in the role of a NRI who later resorts to terrorism because of the difficult circumstances he faces. According to the hearsay, initially Ranbir was approached for the role, who for some reasons refused to be a part of it, which Imran will play now.

Apparently when Karan saw JTYJN he got enthralled by Imran's work and at once decided to approach Imran for his next outing MY NAME IS KHAN. However it is heard that Imran is rather cautious than excited to star alongside Baadshah of Bollywood and has been seeking advice from mamu (Uncle) Aamir for that matter.

Imran in KJO's next?

Here's the biggest news of the week. Rumours are rife that Karan Johar has signed teen sensation Imran Khan for his next project, which will be directed by one of his associates. The film-maker is keen to cast a new face opposite Aamir's bhanja in this film, the story goes.

"I would love to work with Imran, he was fantastic in JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA, but the fact remains that I haven't signed him for any of my projects," Karan Johar tells me, "There's no denying that Imran has great potential. He's sensational and looks so fresh. But the news is untrue."

Meanwhile, Karan has decided on the release date of his new film DOSTANA, being directed by Tarun Mansukhani. It's November 14.

B.O. update: 'J.T.Y.J.N.' opens to almost 100% on Friday

The much-delayed multi-starrer MEHBOOBA, as predicted by us, opened to a good response at single screens in the Hindi belt. However, expectedly, its opening at multiplexes was very poor… JAANE TU YA JAANE NA continues to reign supreme. The film entered into second week with fantastic collections, grossing almost 100% at several screens. What's worth highlighting is that practically all multiplexes have increased the shows of the film in its second week - a fact highlighted in the 'Biz Talk' column on Thursday morning. Besides, the makers have opened approx. 100 more centres from this week. The first week nett is expected to be in the range of Rs. 20 cr. +. After deducting theatre rentals, it clearly indicates that the film has yielded profits for its producer/distributors from the first week itself… LOVE STORY 2050 continues to remain on the lower side. The second weekend has also opened to a lukewarm response.

'Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na' Running Successfully!

Aamir Khan's "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na" has worked wonders at the box-office by registering 100 percent collections in the six days after its release on Friday.

This is not surprising, because even before the release, the excitement generated by "Jaane Tu..." - the debut film of Aamir's nephew Imran - was phenomenal and bookings began five days before the release.

It is a feat no movie so far released this year - not even the previous hit "Race" - could accomplish at the box-office.

Generally, the box-office collections of an average-runner tend to drop after Monday, but the collections of "Jaane Tu..." have remained steady.

The exact up-to-date revenue from domestic and overseas markets is not available as yet. But judging from the box-office trend, it is roughly estimated that "Jaane Tu..." has crossed Rs.300 million mark by Wednesday.

Jaane Tu..." is written and directed by Abbas Tyrewala. Aamir, who has co-produced it with his cousin Mansoor and PVR cinemas, invested Rs.300 million in the puppy love story.

As against the spectacular box-office performance of "Jaane Tu...," the Harman Baweja-Priyanka Chopra starrer "Love Story 2050" has fared miserably and its collections have already started to plummet.

According to trade reports, "Love Story 2050" could generate barely 30 to 40 percent collections in the opening week.

Till Monday, "Love Story 2050" has collected only Rs.110 million from all-India box-office from 722 prints - more than double that of "Jaane Tu..."

"Love Story 2050" seems to be a loser, considering the fact that it was made on a budget of Rs.500 million and also sold to the distributors at a higher price. But the revenue it has garnered at the box-office has remained below the mark and there is little chance of this going upward in next few days.

"Jaane Tu..." success can be attributed to Aamir's marketing plans. Instead of spending millions on production, he spent freely on promoting the movie.

And he has been rewarded handsomely for taking the right decision. He is now laughing all the way to the bank.

Is 'J.T.Y.J.N.' 2008's biggest Hit so far?

It was meant to be a clash of the titans, but the battle royale tilted more in favor of one film from Day 1 itself -- JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA. The headlines screamed, 'Harman versus Imran'. The soothsayers predicted a big start for LOVE STORY 2050. The promotion of this sci-fi film was also befitting its stature.

But, over the years, I've realized that the viewers never get carried away by the hype and hoopla. They go by their instinct. If their heart is set on a film, there's no stopping it. Actually, the industry is always clueless about what the audience wants. We can only indulge in wild guesswork. Kabhi nishaana sahi baithta hain, kabhi nahin.

Right now, it's a JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA wave across the nation. I haven't seen such enthusiasm amongst exhibitors quite frankly. The industry was in the I.C.U. and JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA has come as the sanjeevani booti.

I'd use just one word to describe its business -- Rocking! Friday, Saturday, Sunday, the opening weekend of this teenage prem kahani was superb everywhere. Monday usually witnesses a drop in business, but Monday [75%], Tuesday [70%] and Wednesday [60%+] business only made the trade jump with joy. A few exhibitors tell me that they're increasing the shows in its second weekend, owing to the public demand.

At the rate at which JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is speeding, it should emerge a bigger hit than TAARE ZAMEEN PAR and the biggest hit of the year so far, in terms of economics.

Now LOVE STORY 2050. Anil Ambani's Big Pictures sent me a note on the extensive release strategy of the film on the eve of its release. It's a big film and that explains a big release. So far, so good!

Now let's talk hardcore business! As per the weekend statement sent by the producers to 'Bollywood Hungama', the film has grossed Rs. 7.70 crores in its opening weekend and the week should end at Rs. 11.5 / Rs. 12 crores nett. Which, in the first place, is not a hefty figure keeping in mind the number of prints in circulation. Two, assuming that the week closes at Rs. 12 crores nett [I am being optimistic, since the film dropped drastically from Monday onwards], the distributors' share [after deducting theatre rentals] would be approximately Rs. 5.50 crores. And the shares would only decline as the weeks go by.

Remember, the pricing [Rs. 40 cr., includes prints + promotion expenses] wouldn't be a cause for concern if the film enjoyed strong reports. But it doesn't!

In such a scenario, will the distributors recover the huge price they've invested in the film? Sure, the sale of Satellite and Home Video rights may ensure a chunk, but the theatrical business in India [below the mark] and Overseas [weak] is disappointing. Will it pick up in its second weekend? I doubt! The JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA wave is too strong, too omnipotent, simply unstoppable!

Khan in Kapoor out

With Abbas Tyrewala’s Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na , the fresh maal Imran Khan has managed to impress one and all. But one man who is totally in awe of this young actor is none other than Aamir Khan. And we have a reason for believing this! Aamir is all set with his next production Delly Belly and plans to rope in Imran Khan to play the lead.

Delly Belly will be the fourth film under Aamir Khan Productions and will be directed by an ad filmmaker Abhinay Deo. A unit hand at the production house says, “Aamir Khan was desperately in search of a leading man for Delly Belly since the time Ranbir delayed and finally refused to be a part of it. Ranbir was verbally committed to Aamir but never signed it officially. Hence due to date problems Ranbir had to let go of Aamir’s offer. Although Aamir was considering very few actors to play the lead, his nephew Imran was on his mind all along.”

We all know that the perfectionist Aamir will not go ahead with his plans unless he is completely satisfied. As far as the casting of his film is concerned, Aamir is very selective but was confident about Imran. Before putting anything on paper, he wanted to wait and see the audience’s reaction. Now when Imran has managed to connect with the youth, Aamir wants to cash on his popularity, informed the unit hand.

Aamir has a habit of keeping his projects under wraps and then surprising everyone with an official announcement out of the blue! It is believed that Aamir is keen to sign Imran but when contacted, Imran Khan denied the entire plan calling it a rumor. Imran replied to Indiatimes through a SMS that read, “I am not part of it.”

An insider informs that Imran’s not being an established actor does not bother Aamir and he feels the young lad will suit the lead role best for the sex comedy.
We are sure that the one-film-old actor who played a simple college boy in his debut movie will definitely be a delight to watch in the sex comedy. Apart from Imran, Mamu Aamir will also do a cameo.

With the lead actor in place, Aamir has now to zero upon the leading lady. Apparently, Chitrangada Singh was approached for playing the female lead but she refused the offer after having a check on the role.

The shooting for Delly Belly begins in September and is scheduled to be completed in one long schedule in Delhi.

"I wouldn't wish ill for anyone" - Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan is in a joyous mood! JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is smashing box-office records and at the rate the film is faring, it may turn out to be the biggest grosser of the year, so far. A thrilled Aamir cannot hide his happiness when we discuss the numbers. The fact is, the film has worked big time, not just in India, but also in the international markets [Overseas distributor UTV has yet another Hit to their credit].

"The response is unimaginable. Believe me, I was quite nervous before the release. I was worried about the response. But I have always believed that a sincere effort would always stand out. In this case, I would like to give full credit to Abbas [Tyrewala]. He and his team worked relentlessly to make a genuinely good film," says the soft-spoken actor/producer, who's visiting various cities to promote the film [he's in Nagpur currently].

Has he analyzed, what actually worked? "I've always maintained that the script is the star. JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA was made with utmost honesty and that translated into success," he adds. Tell him that brand 'Aamir Khan' is synonymous with quality cinema and he almost blushes, "No, no… Abbas and his team deserve the credit. I wasn't there as an actor, but Abbas made it happen. Each one, the actors included, worked hard and gave their best."

Amidst all the euphoria, Aamir's name has been dragged into a controversy. Reportedly, the Bawejas -- Harry and Harman -- have cried 'Sabotage', clearly pointing an accusing finger at Aamir. "It's childish," Aamir tells me.

Please elaborate. "I saw Harry and Harman on television. I even read their statements in the media. I've been an actor for 20 years now. I belong to a family that's been making movies for almost five decades. I am well aware of the kind of hard work that goes into making a film. Why would I try to harm anyone? Forget harming, I wouldn't wish ill for anyone, Harry and Harman included."

Aamir continues in the same breath, "I wish them [Bawejas] the best. Har aadmi mehnat karta hain. Ups and downs are part and parcel of this business, but you can't go around town pointing accusing fingers at others. I just don't understand, why am I being dragged into all this?"

The conversation veers towards his next release GHAJINI. Reportedly, the film was slated for release on October 2, but there are reports that it has been postponed to December 12, the same week as Aditya Chopra-SRK's RAB NE BANA DI JODI hits the screens. "I am unaware of their release date, but GHAJINI is not arriving on October 2. We are aiming at November-end release and that's final," he asserts.

A success, JTYJN further pumps up promotion

While it is quite obvious by now that Bollywood has got it's first success of second half of the year in the form of JAANE TU YA JAANE NAA, the people associated with the project are not resting yet. In the latest leg of the film's promotion, a new set of promos has been unveiled which has resulted in an enhanced curiosity about the film.

While the promotion so far revolved around Aamir-Imraan relationship, Rahman's music and the lead protagonists of the film (Imraan, Genelia), it has now taken a turn by bringing to fore quite a few people who have either a special appearance or an important role to play in the film's storyline.

Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan as the Rajasthani cowboys, Paresh Rawal as the mischievous cop, Naseeruddin Shah as the lovable photo frame restricted Rajput dad, Ratna Pathak Shah as Imran's oh-so-natural urban mom - all of them now see special promos being cut around the characters that they enact.

This is not all as each of the four friends in the circle of Imran and Genelia - Karan [as Rotlu], Alishka [as Bombs], Nirav [as Jiggy] and Sughanda [as Shaleen] - now sees special promos that are set entirely on them. Now it's not a common sight to witness so much prominence being given on a bunch of friends, especially when the film marks the launch of a newcomer. But Aamir Khan and Abbas Tyrewala have done it differently and in the process won quite a few hearts by giving credit to each of the four youngsters who make a huge contribution to the film's plot and narrative.

No wonder, the film continues to rake in moolah, benefit out of huge word of mouth, win appreciation and make audiences smile all over again as they look forward to give the film a repeat viewing!

Premiere of Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

"I would not like to be described as Imran's shadow" - Aamir Khan

There was a time when Aamir Khan was termed as a recluse of the Indian Film Industry. Today, television audiences are used to seeing Aamir resplendently suited booted, gliding over a red carpet at glittering Bollywood soirees. Audiences, critics, and the jury of many prestigious award functions alike are awed by Aamir Khan's conviction, dedication, and emotional power as an actor, producer, and a director. And with his third production, Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, releasing tomorrow world wide, the mutli-talented Khan yet again sets out to prove that he is the master of all in this very short but an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama's Devansh Patel just hours before the star studded premiere of his film in Mumbai.

Looks like your Taare's are shining bright ever since you touched Lagaan. I wish you could pass on some of that touch to me. What do your astrologers say?
(Laughs) I don't know. We've tried to make a good film. I think that I'm quite happy with the way it's turned out and waiting to see how the audience reacts to it.

This is your first production with you not a part of the cast. Did Ghajini take a lot of your time or Taare Zameen Par?
TZP. I was directing Taare Zameen Par when Jaane Tu was being shot. So when I took over as the director of Taare, I realized that I'd not be able to fully shoulder my responsibilities as a producer on Jaane Tu… nor did I think of acting in it because it was entirely up to the casting director and the director whom they think is the right choice. So I requested Mansoor to take care of the production and he was there looking after the cast and the crew during the shoot stages. Of course, I was there if there were any problems. But as soon as Taare finished, I was there to look after the post production and the marketing plan for Jaane Tu.

You seem to be like Imran's shadow. Everywhere Imran goes, you follow. Then what was the reason for your absence in London?
(Laughs). I would not like to be described as Imran's shadow. Being the producer of the film, I have been a part of promoting Jaane Tu… and that's what I am doing. So if I accompany Imran, Abbas, or Genelia, I can't be tagged as their shadow. Infact, I'm the shadow of Jaane Tu. But yes, If I was free, I'd have definitely come to London but unfortunately, I was shooting for Ghajini at that time.

Not convinced with Amol Gupte's direction, you took over as a director for Taare. That was past. But we also know that you gave 5 scenes to Abbas to shoot for Jaane Tu… before you could say Yes to him. Have you now started screen testing directors?
Infact, after my experience on Taare, I told Abbas to shoot five scenes to see how he fares as a director. Jaane Tu at that time had not begun their filming. So I requested Abbas because he had never directed a film before. I am pretty sure that I would like to see any new director taking up my project to shoot four or five scenes, whether it's Abbas or anybody else. But if there was an established director, I would not have done that.

What if you did not like all the five scenes or liked two or three of them? Was the back up ready? Or were you prepared to jump into the directors seat?
If any of the five scenes were not directed well by Abbas, I would not have gone ahead with the project even though I loved the script. And that is true. But Abbas proved me wrong.

I remember you and Raj Zutshi used to stick the posters of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak on the auto-rickshaws outside Mithibai College in Mumbai by stopping them. That was marketing in 1988. How much do you think marketing has evolved or will do in the near future?
I think it has changed dramatically from then to now. In 1988, there was only one channel, Doordarshan, and the main line newspapers and magazines did not do much reporting on entertainment nor was there any news on the front pages about films. The media had not completely evolved then. But entertainment in particular has now become a huge part of reporting and news. So while the times have changed, the level of challenges remain the same. In the late 1980's we didn't have enough means to promote the film so we tried to do it the best we could. Today you have a lot of means but you could do it completely wrong. So even if you have the tools in today's time but you don't use them well, it can go against you. You can market the film really badly or people can sense from your marketing that they don't want to see your film.

All your films from Lagaan days to Rang De Basanti to Taare Zameen Par and now Jaane Tu have seen fresh young faces. Is that something you'd like to see with all your films or you being a part of it?
No, it's not a conscious effort. I think it really depends on what kind of script you're doing and it's requirement. You're forgetting that Rani was there in Mangal Pandey. She was an established star. So was Amisha Patel. And I did Fanaa with Kajol. So it's not as if I'm not working with established actors. It really depends from project to project.

While the film was being made and after it's completion, did it take you back to your QSQT days?
(Laughs). Not really. I think Jaane Tu is quite a different film in it's own way even though it's a romantic film and it stars new actors, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was a film which was much more dramatic in its flavor and its content. Yes, seeing Mansoor behind the camera after a sabbatical did make us interact the QSQT days.

There are many successful music directors like Pritam and Vishal Shekhar too who are on the top of their game, then why go with A.R. Rahman just because he has been a part of your earlier films?
You don't think A.R. Rahman is on top of his game. (Laughs out loud). I am very happy with the kind of music he has given to Jaane Tu and I'm so glad that he is a part of the film. But I have worked with other people as well. Taare Zameen Par had Shankar Ehsaan Loy and you know the music was so different and soothing to your ears. It was a new experience for them too. But as I said earlier, it depends on project to project and there might be times when I would like to work with A.R. Rahman and he is busy with other projects. I've not worked with Pritam but his work is nice and has given extremely successful music off late. So if any opportunity arises, I'd definitely like to work with Pritam.

On the posters and media pack, we have seen Imran wearing the same yellow striped tie you wore in your film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. What else has he nicked from your wardrobe?
(Laughs) Well, he keeps grabbing my jackets, t-shirts and other stuff. But yes, you pointed out right. That was the same tie I wore in my film, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.

Any message you'd like to convey to your audience who are not your fans now. They are fans of Aditi.
(Laughs) As I said, we've made a film that we believed in and have really put in our best. I hope the audience too enjoys seeing it as much as we enjoyed making it.

B.O. Update: 'Jaane Tu' takes a flying start, 'L.S. 2050' dull

Box-office throws a lot of surprises and that's the beauty of this business. The verdict is out in the open. JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA has clearly stolen the march, as per initial indications. The film fetched a flying start, collecting 80% + in morning shows and was 100% in noon shows across the country. It's one of the biggest starts of this year. The reports are very good and the film is expected to enjoy a strong, meritorious run in days to come.

On the other hand, the response to LOVE STORY 2005 was evident during the paid previews on Thursday night. Friday morning, the results only became more evident, as the film opened to a 25% response and by noon shows, was in the 35% - 40% range. The reports of the film are below the mark and this big-budget sci-fi venture will have a tough time sustaining itself in the coming days.

Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na : Movie Review

Two decades ago, the Mansoor Khan-helmed QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, starring two newcomers [Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla], focused on teenage love, with parental opposition acting as an obstacle. The story wasn't new, but the treatment was fresh and inventive. QSQT remains one of the finest reference films in this genre and rightly so!

JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is a love story as well, but it's more of an Archie-Jughead-Veronica-Betty kind of a plot, set in the current milieu. We witnessed a gist of it a few years ago in the Shahid Kapur launch pad ISHQ VISHK.

JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA doesn't dare to be different. Basically a simple tale about a group of friends, it focuses on one couple that's in love, but is in a state of denial. Haven't we watched similar love stories in the past, you may ask. Sure, we have, but the execution of the subject makes all the difference.

Large portions of JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA have been executed well by debutante director Abbas Tyrewala, but the problem lies in the second hour when the film gets lengthy and also, a few tracks throw a spanner in the otherwise smooth proceedings. Even the climax, although well shot, is passĂ© [very filmy in an otherwise real film], since a number of films have had similar endings.

Yet, despite the shortcomings, JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA works for a number of solid reasons and that's what the viewer carries home. A decent fare that takes you back to your adolescence, when friends seem to be the be-all and end-all.

Jai [Imran Khan] and Aditi [Genelia] are buddies. In fact, they hang out with their group of friends, but have eyes for each other only. Their friends know that Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other. Their parents know this as well. Everybody knows this. But the couple doesn't. So when do they realize its love?

Don't expect fireworks or melodrama in this prem kahani. It's an extremely simple, uncomplicated tale that never goes over the top. The bonding amongst friends is well established. So is the relationship that Ratna Pathak Shah shares with her deceased husband's portrait [reminds you of Ashok Saraf-Priya Tendulkar relationship in the popular comedy show HUM PAANCH].

Besides, the two [popular] songs that come in the initial reels -- 'Kabhi Kabhi' and 'Pappu Can't Dance' -- only spice up the proceedings. The arrival of the 'third angle' in this love story [Manjari Phadnis] is perfect. Everything is faultless in the first hour.

But the second hour lets you down. The Ayaz-Genelia relationship is, again, well developed, but the second hour gets a tad lengthy. But what looks completely out of place in this light and breezy entertainer is the Rajput connection and how it saves the lead man from the cop [Paresh Rawal]. This track irritates!

Also, the climax, set in an airport, is beaten to death. There's no novelty in it, since we've seen the same ending in film after film.

Abbas Tyrewala has the makings of a fine director. A.R. Rahman's music is already a rage and the two songs at the start are superb compositions. Cinematography is excellent.

Every member of the cast stands out, but the film belongs to Imran and Genelia. Imran has been presented as the boy-next-door and that works in his favor. He has screen presence and acts very well for a first timer. Most importantly, he looks the part. Genelia adds freshness to her scenes. What makes you take to Genelia is her spontaneity. Also, the mischievous look in her eyes conveys sorrow with equal ease. Wish to see more of her in Hindi movies! Manjari is a complete natural. She is very effective.

The group of friends -- Karan [as Rotlu], Alishka [as Bombs], Nirav [as Jiggy] and Sughanda [as Shaleen] -- are excellent. Each compliments the other well. Ratna Pathak Shah is highly competent. Jayant Kripalani and Anuradha Patel [as Genelia's parents] are sweet. Pratiek Babbar [as Genelia's brother] springs a pleasant surprise. He is flawless in an unconventional role. Ayaz Khan [as Genelia's fiancé] registers a strong impact. A good actor!

Rajat Kapoor and Kitu Gidwani [as Manjari's parents] are fair. Naseeruddin Shah is in terrific form. Paresh Rawal, again, is wonderful. Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan irritate, mainly because the roles don't work.

On the whole, JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is a breezy entertainer which will be loved by its target audience -- the youth. At the box-office, business at multiplexes should ensure a speedy recovery for this moderate budget film. A profitable venture!

Aamir-Imran on Cine Blitz cover

With just a few days to go for the release of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, Aamir Khan and his nephew Imran Khan are all over the place. The duo is now seen in this month's issue of Cine Blitz magazine. Both mamu Aamir and his bhanja Imran are seen dressed in their formal best wearing dapper suits.

Imran shares an interesting anecdote of how this is only the second time that he has worn a suit in his life (the first time being during the premiere of mamu Aamir's debut film QSQT). The duo seems to be enjoying each other's company and by the looks of it, this is one mama-bhanja jodi who are going to be spoken about for years to come.

ROCK ON!! with JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA

While there have been issues in the recent past, whereby trailors of upcoming films have not been included in the prints of new films, or added after much deliberations, here is a totally opposite case, which should set new precedents!

Producer Aamir Khan has proved to be a genuine friend of new actor, though highly successful director (DIL CHAHTA HAI, LAKSHYA and DON), Farhan Akhtar and also of producer Ritesh Sidhwani.

Apparently, Aamir Khan himself asked producer Ritesh Sidhwani to include the promo of his film ROCK ON!!, in the prints of Aamir's forthcoming production venture, JAANE TU... YA JAANE NA. After getting the nod, Aamir has gone ahead and the promos of ROCK ON!! can be seen this Friday, during the screening of JTYJN.

As may be recalled, Aamir Khan had acted in Ritesh's DIL CHAHTA HAI, which was Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut venture.

New 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' Trailer

The big clash

This is a real Exclusive and as always, it's first on Bollywood Buzz.

July 4 is one crucial date. Aamir Khan's nephew Imran Khan and Harry Baweja's son Harman Baweja are keeping their fingers crossed for their debut films, JAANE TU YA JAANE NA and LOVE STORY 2050, respectively.

“I'm already getting the jitters. I wouldn't deny, I am feeling more and more nervous as the release dates draws nearer,” Harman confides. But Imran is feeling exactly the opposite. “I'm not feeling nervous or anxious. In fact, I am not experiencing anything that would tense me up. Perhaps, I may experience varied emotions as the release date draws closer,” Imran tells me.

What about the big clash, the battle royale? “Listen, the business is sure to be divided. Imagine placing two mugs of coffee in front of you. The viewer has a choice. If both taste good, I'm sure he'd relish both,” Harman has a point. Imran, again, feels differently. “Why is the media hell-bent on creating a war of sorts? It has been proved in the past that two good films can co-exist in one week. And I'm sure both will co-exist,” he speaks his mind.

However, both Harman and Imran admit they'd love to watch the other's films. And that's something that needs to be appreciated!

‘I don’t need to apologise to SRK'

On the 28th floor of a plush South Mumbai hotel (where he’s temporarily shifted as he’s shooting nearby for Ghajini), Aamir Khan’s suite has a breathtaking view of the sea.

The inhabitant is no less breathtaking as far as his achievements are concerned. Aamir is ready to field the questions...

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (Aamir Khan Productions) was earlier supposed to be produced by some other banner.
Yes, it was being produced by Jhamu Sugandh. There was some trouble there. Abbas Tyrewala (director) told me that it might not take off. That’s when I pitched in, not because I wanted to help them out—professionally, I don’t help anyone but because I loved the script.

You’ve said that your nephew Imran Khan (debuting in Jaane Tu) is better than you.
He is certainly better looking than me. He is far better in his first film than I was in mine. He is raw just as I was but he is more unusual.

Your blog speaking about Shah Rukh Khan received a lot of flak. Do you regret that?
I don’t regret it at all. It was done in good humour. I am the kind of person I am. Shah Rukh and I share a very good relationship. What’s nice about it is that we feel comfortable enough to joke about each other. Some of my fans have felt that I shouldn’t have written that. I’m sorry about that.

    Did you apologise to SRK?
No, I don’t need to. He doesn’t need to apologise to me after joking about me. I know he means well. I like that he feels free to joke about me.

At the recent IIFA event you were made fun of. People still can’t digest the fact that you don’t attend award ceremonies.
I’ve nothing personal against award ceremonies. Next month, I’ll be going to Chennai to receive an award that they give to debutant directors. I value it. Likewise, I recently received the Dinanath Mangeshkar award, because I have high regard for the organisation and the people involved.

How do you decide which award to value?
If it comes from an organisation, which really knows cinema! You see the record of people who have received the awards in the past and you know.

Do you value the National Awards? Are you looking to win one for Taare Zameen Par?
Yes, I do. I do hope to win it. Though there have been inconsistencies and controversies reported around the National Awards, it’s an award I like to recognise and respect. The President of India presents them away. It still has credibility.

You are releasing Jaane Tu with Harry Baweja’s Love 2050 even though he requested you to postpone it. Why?
Yes, he did request me. But we thought this was the right time to release as colleges are reopening. It’s that kind of a film. I wish Harry all the best. I think Harman is very good.

Someone who has always shied away, why are you throwing such a huge premiere party for the entire industry?
I wanted to have a premiere for TZP also but was running against time. This an important moment for our family. There are lot of people my uncle (late filmmaker Nasir Husain, Imran’s grandfather) had close associations with. Uncle is not with us but this would have been a happy moment for him. I’d like to invite all his colleagues and my friends.
