Shah Rukh back with Yash Raj

    NEW - 30/09/2005 - malik.bollywood@gmail.com
Shah Rukh Khan has signed Ab Tak Chappan director Shimit Amin’s next project, to be produced by Yashraj films, putting to rest rumours of a rift between Khan and the Chopras. From the dark mood of Ram Gopal Varma’s factory, to the light, feel-good ambience of Yash Chopra’s chiffon-and-pearls cinema, Shimit has come a long way.So will Ab Tak Chappan meet Dilwale Dulhaniya? “Actually,” says the US-bred Shimit, accent in place, “I started a film after Ab Tak Chappan for Ram Gopal Varma, called Let’s Catch Veerappan. But when Veerappan died, the project was aborted. I left India to go back home to the US (he has family in North Carolina and Los Angeles), and now I’m back with this project.”Apparently Aditya Chopra heard Shimit’s script and was bowled over. “All I can say at this point is that it’s gonna be very different mood and texture from Ab Tak Chappan.” Will it have songs and music? “I don’t know. It might; I can’t say at this point of time,” avers the director. Secret societyKnowing Yashraj’s penchant for secrecy, Shimit seems to be walking on glass. “No,” he laughs. “Even if my producers weren’t known to be secretive, I’d have been hesitant to discuss my new project. It’s all so fresh and incomplete right now.” The film, written by Jaideep Sahni (who wrote RGV’s Company), commences in mid-2006.But a leap from Varma to Chopra surely entails a lot of readjustment? “Not really,” says Shimit. “If Chappan reflected Ram Gopal Varma’s cinema, I’m sure my film for Yashraj Films will definitely reflect the new reality in my creative vision. But it doesn’t mean my own individual creativity won’t matter. Yashraj Films is like the old Hollywood studio system of the 1940s and ’50s, when every production company, from Paramount to MGM to Columbia, made films that reflected their individual style. And yet every director, be it George Cukor, Michael Curtiz or Vincent Minelli, brought in his own reality. I hope to achieve the same synthesis of patented production style and my individual talent for this project.”Shimit seems loath to admit that he’s moved away from Varma’s factory-formed vision. “If you say Yashraj Films is posh, so is Varma Corporation. Their films reflect a different kind of sophistication and glamour, that’s all. Ab Tak Chappan wasn’t a small arthouse film. It made quite an impact.”From Nana Patekar to Shah Rukh Khan, Shimit’s made an interesting leap in style and substance!

Aamisha-Adnan link: Vikram keeps mum!

    NEW - 29/09/2005 - malik.bollywood@gmail.com
The buzz about the industry grapevine-insisted link between famous pop singer Adnan Sami and Bollywood actress Aamisha Patel is not new; though Aamisha and Adnan always have come denying the rumours and after that Aamisha's 'official' boyfriend director Vikram Bhatt, whom Aamisha called the sexiest man of the world, felt little relieved, however this time Vikram is apparently looking hurt, after he heard the rumour about Adnan-Aamisha's rekindled romance. If there is no fire, how does smoke evolve? Vikram knows that and so keeping mum. Adnan didn't rule out that he is dating a Bollywood actress, but he refused to say the name. As per buzz, the romance began during Adnan Sami's latest world tour, where he visited the US, Canada and UK. And industry grapevine insists the gal is none but our own Patel babe, Aamisha.

Aish's Latest Gossips

New - 23/09/2005 - 01. Ash busy in her international film, J.P. Dutta waits [IANS]
Aishwarya Rai has been shooting non-stop for her first full-fledged English film "The Last Legion" in Tunisia, as director J.P. Dutta waits for her return next month to start shooting for "Umrao Jaan".
But there seems to be a bit of problem there. Ash won't be back in time to start "Umrao Jaan" on schedule.
Says Dutta: "It is not her fault at all. Apparently, the shooting of her foreign film is behind schedule. And there will probably be a delay of a week. It's a routine delay and one for which she is in no way responsible.
"Her contract for the foreign film clearly states that there can be a spillover in the shooting dates. She has no choice but to stay back.
"But that really puts me in a fix. How do I start the film without Ash? There is no 'Umrao Jaan' without Umrao! It is like Agra without the Taj Mahal."
    Has JP spoken to Ash?
"She had called for Ganesh Chaturthi. About the dates? No! Her secretary has been in touch and he has informed me of the inevitable delay. We are trying to work out a solution. But it looks like I will have to start building my Agra without the Taj Mahal."
New - 23/09/2005 - 02. Controversy roars before Ash poses as Sonia!
Is Jagmohan Mundhra, who is currently making 'Provoked' featuring Aishwarya Rai in the lead, also making a film on the life of Congress President Sonia Gandhi? The answer is, yes, but it's at very primary stage, nothing has finalized yet. On the request of the London-based producer Dr J. Murli Manohar, who has just released the new Hindi satire 'Ramji Londonwale', the 'Provoked' director however agreed to direct the film. They've bought the rights of Rashid Kidwai's biography on Sonia Gandhi too. They have talked to Carla Gugino, the actress from 'Spy Kids 2', they have also spoken to Preity Zinta in India for the role of Sonia, but as they felt it needs an authentic international face, they zeroed in on none but the one and only Aishwarya Rai. To be honest, they have not even approached her yet. Carl Austen will write the script. For the role of Rajiv Gandhi, they had international name like Jimmi Mistry in mind, but still have not settled up. But quite before the thing takes shape, controversy comes on the way. A city-based actor who described himself as "active Congress worker" on Tuesday filed a petition in a court here against the proposed films on the life of Congress President Sonia Gandhi. The petitioner objected these films are being made without Sonia Gandhi's permission and they would hurt the sentiments of the people. He also sought a ban on making of any such film and prayed to the court to issue directions to this effect. And as per development took place yesterday, a notice has been sent to the makers of the film, in the notice, the court has directed the writer-directors to be present on September 26 in the court

John to work with Deepa Mehta's again!

    NEW - 21/09/2005 - malik.bollywood@gmail.com
In the wake of Water's critical acclaim, its director, Deepa Mehta, has called on actor John Abraham to join the cast of her next directorial enterprise - the multi-million epics project Komagata Maru.
Deepa says, "After Water, I've realised how professional and pleasant Indian actors can be. John's discipline before, during, and after Water is exemplary. Here was an actor from an English-speaking background who mastered the Sanskrit words in the dialogue, learnt to play the flute, wear a dhoti, and who came on location to Sri Lanka fully prepared. I was bowled over. As the shooting progressed I realised what a fine performer John was. I think subconsciously I had made up my mind to work with him again even before Water was complete."
John will now play a pivotal role in Deepa's Komagata Maru, a film for which Deepa is keen to have Amitabh Bachchan in the central role. "I think it is important to have the cast in place, and I see Mr Bachchan and John in this film."When she elaborates on the impression John left on her and the movie-going public in Toronto, Deepa says, "His goodness of heart shows up on screen and in his real-life conduct. You've no idea of the kind of impact John has made with his performance. He has mobs of fans of every age and gender running after him."
Deepa is regretful that her first choice for the two leads in Water didn't work out. "I sincerely wanted Kareena Kapoor for the female lead. I had seen her in Refugee and thought she was the perfect blend of beauty and talent. She's ethereal. I though she would be perfect as Kalyani. Kareena seemed excited then. Then suddenly I was only left to deal with her secretary… As for Rahul Khanna, I am very fond of him. It's a pity he couldn't do Water. But it was all for the best, because I can't imagine Water without John and Lisa."
John goes into Komagata Maru as soon as Deepa finishes her script.

Rani launches manual in Braille

    NEW - 21/09/2005 - malik.bollywood@gmail.com
As part of its ongoing endeavor to provide maximum comfort and convenience to its valued customers, and in keeping with its non-discriminatory stance, Jet Airways will be the first Indian air carrier to provide an In-flight Safety Instruction Manual in Braille for its visually challenged passengers. To attend to this hitherto un-addressed need, this pioneering initiative has been introduced by Jet Airways, based on a concept of The Association for Blindness and Low Vision. Jet Airways launched their In-flight Safety Manual in Braille over a Press Conference in Mumbai. Much-acclaimed Bollywood star, Rani Mukherjee was the Chief Guest and unveiled the manual and shared her experiences of her performance in the film BLACK. This is probably because of her performance as a blind (deaf and dumb) girl who uses Braille and succeeds in her education in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's BLACK. Mr. Javed Akhtar, and a member of the Board of Directors of Jet Airways also graced the occasion.

Delhi Police deny permission to Shah Rukh show

    NEW - IANS
The much-awaited Shah Rukh Khan's 'Temptation 2005' slated to be held here Sep 17 has been cancelled as Delhi Police denied permission to stage it.
With just three days to go for the first ever live concert of Shah Rukh in Delhi, the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) Wednesday informed about the cancellation of the show.
"With utmost pain and deepest regret, I have to inform that the long awaited concert will not be held. The police denied us permission citing possible law and order problems and we are helpless," Javed Abidi, executive director of NCPEDP told IANS.
NCPEDP, a non-governmental organisation was organising the show to raise money for the welfare of disabled people.
"It is a mockery of capability of the police department. Even the chief minister and the chief secretary of the state did not help us stage the show. Here authorities do not help people who fight for a good cause," Abidi said.
According to police, the show was likely to attract more than 50,000 people and this could lead to an uncontrollable situation. However NCPEDP does not accept this.
"When we were selling tickets and giving passes to only 28,250 people, there is no question of more people entering the venue," he added.
Though the show was conceptualised two months ago, the performance ran into trouble early over the permission of a suitable venue.
Without getting the clearance from the fire department, the show, which was originally supposed to take place in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, had to relinquish hopes for that venue.
Till yesterday, it was known that the concert would take place in a field adjacent to the stadium, for which the organisers had procured no-objection certificates from both the electricity and fire departments.
But the Delhi Police finally decided not to allow the show, the organisers informed.

On the treatment of women in the industry, the actress believes that it is important to face the challenge irrespective of the gender. “It is not easy but I think it lies in one’s ability to say no”, says Ash.
